Small Story 446
The Missed Books
Kesav received greetings from his friends all over the world on his 70th birthday. As an Award–winning writer, he had plenty of friends and readers. He had written ten books, all of which were popular and translated into four languages.
That morning, his ardent reader from Madurai, Swamy, who often read his books and sent him comments, asked for his address. Three hours later, Kesav received a sweet parcel filled with his favourite treats and was happy to see Swamy’s name on it. He immediately called and thanked Swamy, a retired accountant from the TVS group in Madurai. Swamy was delighted to receive the writer’s call.
“Sir, thank you for calling me,” Swamy said. “Along with your favourite sweets—Mysorepak and Badusha—I also sent a small parcel containing a copy of the Bhagavad Gita and an investigation novel, which I know you like.”
Kesav was surprised.
“Mr. Swamy, I received only the sweet parcel, not the books.”
Swamy was equally surprised.
“Oh! I will call the person I asked to deliver them. Thank you, sir. Take care.”
After the call, Kesav felt a little disappointed. Being a writer who loved reading investigation books, he would have enjoyed the gift that had gone missing. Yet he deeply appreciated Swamy’s affection and his thoughtful selection of a book he knew Kesav would love.
Sending gifts to loved ones and admired personalities always has a special charm. Kesav felt grateful to be one of those who received such sincere affection from a devoted reader.
