Small Story 389.

Small Story 389: ATrip With More Happiness Despite the heavy rains, Archana reached her uncle’s house in the posh apartment complex on Kanakapura Road. She was warmly greeted by Aunt Ambujam and Uncle Ramadurai. Archana handed over sweet boxes, a dhoti for Uncle, and a silk saree for Auntie. Recently, the couple had quietly celebrated their 80th birthday at their family deity’s temple in Kumbakonam. They had chosen not to invite anyone, preferring a simple celebration with traditional rituals. Ramadurai, a former RAW director who retired two decades ago, had since settled in Bengaluru. Their only son, currently in Brazil, couldn’t attend the birthday due to work commitments. He had married a Dutch woman, and they had a daughter named Vandhana, who was deeply attached to her grandparents and made it a point to listen to her grandmother’s weekly talks over video calls. Ramadurai, ever active, dedicated his time to serving in a senior citizens' home. Quietly, on his 80th birthday, he funded a complete renovation of the building, spending nearly one million rupees—a generous act he didn’t disclose to anyone. Archana, the only daughter of Ramadurai’s sister, was now settled in Srirangam with her husband after retiring from the bank. Their only son, Ravi, lived in Sydney and had shown no interest in marriage. After spending two fulfilling days with her uncle and aunt, Archana went to visit her old friend Nivedha in Mysore. Nivedha was delighted to meet Archana after five long years. She had once entertained the idea of her daughter Sandhya marrying Ravi, but since he wasn’t interested, the idea never progressed. Nevertheless, their friendship remained strong and unshaken. After two more pleasant days in Mysore, Archana returned to Srirangam, her heart full of gratitude for the warmth and hospitality she had received from her uncle, aunt, and friend—even though her subtle hopes had not materialized. Still, the enduring relationships and heartfelt bonds reminded her that true happiness often lies in such quiet, meaningful connections. K.Ragavan 5-10-25 ✅
