Small Story 411

Small Story 411 Honest Words from a Servant Shyamala kept ₹1000 aside for her servant to buy Deepavali sweets. When she handed over the money in an envelope, the servant asked, “Madam, what is this for?” Shyamala replied, “Since you joined just a week ago, I wanted to give you this amount to buy sweets for your child.” The servant smiled gratefully and said, “Thank you, Madam. I’ll buy a little for my daughter and save the rest to purchase provisions. During the COVID period, I didn’t have a job, and that’s when my husband passed away. I’ve learned to spend very carefully. My 4-year-old daughter also understands—she never asks me to buy toys or chocolates.” Shyamala was touched by her words. She said gently, “If you ever need any advance from your salary, I can give it right now.” The servant replied with a firm smile, “No, Madam, thank you. My father taught me never to take loans or salary advances. Once you start taking advances, it never ends. I want to receive my full salary after 30 days.” Shyamala was moved again by her honesty and self-respect. After finishing her work, the servant departed. Shyamala nodded thoughtfully—many take advantage when they can, but only a few like her show such integrity. Truly, great Madhuri. K.Ragavsn
