While this aspect is undeniably beneficial, there exists a darker side where individuals have fallen victim to fraudulent schemes, as unscrupulous actors leverage fake profiles and manipulation for financial gain. The methods employed in creating these deceitful accounts often ensnare unsuspecting users. Reputable platforms maintain their integrity by actively combating these fake profiles, yet in the hustle and bustle of daily life, vigilance can wane. Personally, upon retiring from the UAE in 2009, I encountered an instance where two friends received an email claiming I was stranded in Barcelona through my old email, prompting me to swiftly transition to a different website. Cyber breaches are a recurrent issue, emphasizing the need for cautiousness. Before accepting requests, one must diligently assess the profiles and behavior. Despite the inherent drawbacks, the benefits of social media platforms outweigh the disadvantages, particularly in my commendable experiences spanning over 14 years on Twitter and LinkedIn, as well as a few years on Facebook.
