Will live on in films

The 67-year-old veteran Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor's demise is an irrecoverable loss for the Bollywood film industry. He started his first film with his father, Raj Kapoor, also a veteran actor. Rishi Kapoor made his first on-screen appearance in a cameo for a song, in his father’s film “Shree 420” when he was three years old. He acted in many films and did all kinds of roles and captured the minds of millions. His relatively latest film, “102 Not Out” with Amitabh Bachchan was remarkable. Kapoor is no more, but his films are still here. This is another blow to the film industry. I pray for his grieving family during this time.

India’s lockdown extended

The extension of the lockdown in India from April 15 from May 3 was a welcome move from Prime Minster Narendra Modi (“COVID-19 in India: Lockdown reveals fresh air, cleaner rivers", www.gulfnews.com, April 22). The announcement gave good news for the Indians who were staying at home. The lockdown deadline is May 3, which makes the total days people in India would have spent in lockdown, to be 40. I think India has monitored the coronavirus pandemic very well and compared to the population of India. The main task for the Modi government is to make arrangements for the migrant workers staying in various states. This issue is very important and the government needs to act.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 23April 20 We need facts and vaccines, not rumours
With regards to Justin Thomas's article Where is the vaccine against conspiracy theories? (April 21): this was an interesting read and something that has been on people's minds. The columnist has nicely analysed how social media, mainly Facebook, helps spread rumours that go viral and induce fear among millions of people. Spreading misinformation about the virus is not going to solve anything. Facts and vaccines are what we need, not rumours.

A risk to everyone

The protests in the US demanding that the Donald Trump administration lift the stay home orders, is incomprehensible (“COVID-19 effect: US to halt immigration over virus fears”, Gulf News, April 21). The people protesting believe that this order is against their rights. The US has the most number of deaths due to coronavirus and yet people are demanding to be allowed to leave their homes. It is a sad state of affairs. Healthcare workers had to counter protests by standing in the middle of roads to stop people from driving. It shows how much those protesting do not understand the risk they are in.

Happy 12th anniversary to The National

I write to you in reference to your editorial The National at 12: we are always changing with the times (April 17). This anniversary editorial was a pleasant read. As a long-time reader of these pages I have witnessed The National's immense growth over the years. I am very happy that the newspaper is now entering its 13th year. As the editorial has mentioned, the newspaper's first cover when it launched in 2008 featured the story of Nabeel Kamran, a young boy from Sharjah who had undergone a successful organ transplant. Now, the world faces an immense health crisis. And The National continues to cover the world's latest developments. I wish the editorial team and all the other employees at The National the very best. Keep up the good work.

Listen to the government

The ongoing crisis of the deadly coronavirus is spreading fast all around the world (“COVID-19: UAE National Disinfection Programme to continue”, Gulf News, April 4). The main causes is people’s negligence. People are not paying attention to the advice given by authorities, in India and other parts of the world.
Most of the countries have taken precautionary measures, especially in the UAE. Their effort is laudable. In India, many states have taken care of the situation but many people are indisciplined. People should not go meeting other people. Unwanted meetings should definitely be avoided. The basic idea of following rigid disciplinary action should not only be practiced during the lock-down period but should be practiced generally.
The numbers of positive COVID-19 cases are increasing all around the world. Many countries are currently in lock-down to stop the spread of the virus. Apart from this, in many countries, doctors and those who work in healthcare are being beaten and attacked, which is unacceptable. People should cooperate with the government and follow the guidelines.

Letter Published in BM on 6April 20 .Thank you to all who have helped
K Ragavan writes, the story of grave-diggers donating their one month’s salary really touches one’s heart and revives lost hope in these trying times. This might be a small contribution, but it is one of the greatest contributors to restoring faith in humanity. This relief fund hopefully encourages others to donate too. If one can afford it, monetary help will be a great aid to those in need, fighting this dangerous battle with the microscopic enemy. In three months, coronavirus has changed the world and has the potential to do further damage. Hopefully, good souls like these grave-diggers, will come forward and help build the world and make it a better and safer place to live.

Govts are doing their best, people should listen

K. Ragavan

Negligence and recklessness are the prime reasons why we are registering rising number of cases of Covid-19 infections everyday globally. Governments around the world are suggesting social distancing, taking precautions, wearing masks.
The UAE is doing an incredible job at taking care of the residents, and putting in place measures that can contain the spread of the virus. People in the UAE are cooperating by adhering to the government directive. There is discipline here.
In India, too, the central and state governments have waged an all out war against the disease. The nationwide lock down is in place. However, indiscipline among people is visible. Some Indians are still going round and meeting people. Unwanted meetings should be avoided.
I do agree there are many people in India that survive on their daily wages. And then there are taxi drivers, auto drivers, labourers, small restauranteurs who have been hit. But the basic idea of following rigid discipline was to contain the spread of the virus, so that Indian government would not have to extend the lock down.
Now day by day the numbers are increasing globally and many cities that are in lock down might continue to remain so for longer. There is no way out except for prevention.
Besides, it is appalling to read about violence meted out to doctors, volunteers, health workers. Why are such people being abused when all they are trying to do is help people?
People should cooperate with the governments and follow the advice religiously. This is the only way around at the moment. -K. Ragavan, Bengaluru, India

Implications on the deadly Corona Virus.

The on  going  crisis of deadly virus Corona and it’s fast spreading   World over and thousands of Causalities witnessed was sad and painful. The main causes more day to day number of cases increasing only due to people’s negligence not accepting the advice from their authorities Wheather in India or abroad. Most of the countries taken care of their people and especially UAE is caring the people and so many precautionary measures made was laudable. In India many states has taken more care but lot indiscipline from people was visible.People should not  go round and meeting people and unwanted meetings should be avoided.I do agree many daily wage people ,vendors taxis,Autos
and others fully depending are  very much affected on this virus. But the basic idea of following rigid discipline only not to extend the lock down period. Now day by day the numbers are increasing globally and many places lock down period may extend because not able to control. It is up to the people to decide wheather the lock down period should continue or not.Apart from this in many places health workers, doctors and volunteers are abused and attacked was highly unacceptable. My conclusion on this tough hour people should cooperate with the government
and follow the advice religiously in the house to over come  should have more patience and above all prayers in home. This deadly virus costed many  trillion dollars world wide.As early as possible new innovations should be introduced by researchers to prevent loss of lives as well financial.
