Letter Published in BM On 30 No saffronisation in awarding contract
CV Aravind writes, The awarding of the contract to run Indira Canteens in the city to the Girija Shastry Memorial Trust named in memory of the late Union Minister Ananth Kumar’s mother and run by his wife Tejaswini Ananth Kumar clearly satisfies the tender norms. (A touch of saffron in Indira canteens). The Trust was the lowest bidder and the L1 principle was adopted as per the rules governing tenders floated by the state government. There is clearly nothing more than meets the eye in this issue as the Trust is qualified for the job given its impressive track record as an NGO that has been engaged in such social activities. The Trust is being run with a messianic zeal and has reached out to thousands of impoverished students, men and women. It is therefore needless to give a political colour to the issue as it is evident that the government has neither deviated from procedure nor violated any norms in awarding the contract. K Ragavan writes on Twitter, continuous maintenance of quality in these canteens is important. Since the NGO already has a track record in providing midday meals, I hope they will provide better services and good food at these canteens

Letter Published in KhaleejTimes UAE on 28Jan 20 Kobe will remain in our hearts and inspire peopleThe death of NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna in a helicopter crash that killed seven more came as a shock. The world of sports has lost a star, a personality that transcended the traditional court and become a household name. NBA Commissioner put it succinctly when he said, “Kobe showed us what is possible when remarkable talent blends with an absolute devotion to winning.” He left us too soon.
My twin grandsons are basketball players and admire Kobe Bryant. They, like many kids around the world, woke up to the sad news of his demise. Kobe will remain in our hearts and continue to inspire people. RIP, star.

A cricket legend

The demise of 86-year-old former cricketer Bapu Nadkarni is a great loss to the world of cricket. He is known for being an all-rounder and excelled in bowling. His maiden overs and well maintained ball length was superb. He was always appreciated by the commentators for his magnificent bowling. I pray for this departed legend and his family members.

Letter Published in DH Bengaluru People's problems Column on 27Jan 20   Protect interests of Guru Raghavendra bank depositors

The recent episode of Guru Raghavendra Bank, where restrictions on withdrawal pushed many deposit holders into a panic, shows that we need urgent efforts to help the depositors. Senior citizens are depositing their hard-earned money in private banks to get a little additional interest to meet the mounting inflation.
When such is the case, the authorities should not restrict withdrawal. Any inquiry into mismanagement, not catering the deserving loan applicants and other issues should not victimise the deposit holders.
Authorities concerned should take steps to ensure that depositors’ interest is protected and allow them to recover their money.

K.Ragavan writes the decision Ismail has taken are right. However, it takes guts to take such a decision and leave the comfortable life to the old life of small comforts. This story reminds me of the proverb, old habits die hard. The way he lived and was brought up cannot be. Ultimately one needs peaceful life on his choice.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 22Jan 20From its former glory, Iraq has seen much tragedy in the past decades
With reference to Mina Aldroubi’s report Six killed in Iraq as protests escalate over lack of reform (January 20): adding to the ongoing crisis in Iraq, this latest clash between demonstrators and security forces has caused a horrific six deaths.
Ever since the fall of the former dictator Saddam Hussein, Iraq and its people have suffered at the hands of internal and external terror groups. Still, the international community has not come out with a concrete solution for the future of Iraq. I hope in the coming days the people of Iraq are taken care of by the administration. But whether it will be able to secure a future for Iraqis free of violence remains to be seen.

One and half months ago, I shifted to JP Nagar 2nd Phase, behind the Central Mall. Being a very busy area, the footpaths are in very bad condition. The pedestrians are forced to walk on roads risking their lives. Many people visit Ragigudda temple in the area. Repairing pavements will be most helpful to the people, especially senior citizens and children. I request the authorities to take positive measures.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 20Jan 20The goings-ons in cricket keep getting more interesting by the day
With regard to the article No panic from Virat Kohli as he leads India into winner-takes-all ODI clash against Australia (January 19): this was a good read. After India’s first loss in Mumbai against Australia, the team made up in the second match at Rajkot. All prominent players, except Shreyas Iyer, were ready to face the final in my city, Bengaluru.
The dynamics of the team keep getting more interesting with each season. Us fans watch keenly for developments in the cricket world.
And its good to see that Indian captain Virat Kohli has eradicated the panic of the first match defeat and has infused the team with confidence.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 19Jan 20 Sentence for the New Delhi rapists should be carried out swiftly
I write to you in reference to your news item Hanging of New Delhi rapists pushed back to February 1 (January 17).
The four people who have been convicted for a brutal gang rape case in 2012 have had their death sentences postponed to February 1. This might not be good news to the victim’s parents who are waiting for justice to be served.
It took Indian justice seven years to pronounce this judgement, so postponing the sentence for these criminals is not a good idea.
This verdict should serve as an example for people who are inclined to commit such heinous crimes.
I believe that handing the death sentence to these individuals is the best way for justice to be served.

Letter Published in BM on 13Jan 20This is despicable act of violence
K Ragavan writes, The story of the estranged wife of a techis is rather chilling to read on Sunday morning. Bringing police as mediator and hitting her husband is not only condemnable but also highly unacceptable. False accusations of dowry harassment just shadows the struggle of real sufferers. Srividya should be tried like a criminal for the harassment and distress she has caused Vinod. The picture of him holding his broken arm is also a cold reality of how people can become beast and lose complete empathy for others. Such news of extreme violence in marriages have always been around, but one would think that with time, people might have progressed, however nothing seems to have changed and we have just become smarter in our torture methods

Letter Published in The National UAE on 9Jan 20 Iraqis will be the first to pay for escalating US-Iran tensionsI write to you in reference to Joyce Karam and Jack Dutton’s article Donald Trump reverses on targeting Iran’s ‘cultural sites’ (January 8).I do not think that it is a good idea for Mr Trump to threaten bombing Iranian cultural sites if the regime retaliates to Qassem Suleimani’s killing in a US airstrike. The targeting of cultural heritage sites is considered to be a war crime by the Geneva convention and it is in no way an effective means of persuading Iran to de-escalate.Whether Mr Trump will bomb Iran or not, the regime has already retaliated by attacking an Iraqi base where US forces are stationed, killing Iraqi people.I fear ordinary Arabs will be the first to suffer from escalating tensions, not Americans or Iranians.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

Letter Published in The National UAEon 6Jan 20 Dubai’s taxi service is one of the best in the world, as is its public transport  I write in reference to your article Dubai taxis clock up 25 years and a billion passengers (January 4): that Dubai’s taxis have ferried up to one billion passengers and made more than 680 million trips over the past 25 years is just eye-popping. All world-class cities have excellent public transport facilities that are complemented by adequate infrastructure – from good roads to cashless payment systems – and in this aspect, Dubai is right up there with the world’s best metros. While these statistics prove that Dubai is indeed a thriving economic centre – after all, people mostly use public transport on weekdays to go to work – they also drive home the importance of developing an environmental consciousness. The more people use public transport, the better for air quality.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

Letter Published in The National UAE on 5Jan 20 The Middle East might suffer as a result of the US-Iran conflict I write in reference to Joyce Karam’s article Qassem Suleimani: A loss too big for Iran to leave unanswered (January 3): there is little doubt Suleimani was an asset to the Iran regime. His success in helping spread Tehran’s influence across the Middle East in the past two decades is a testament of this.It is little wonder then that the US wanted to eliminate him, especially given the escalating of tension between the two powers in Iraq. But the question is, how much this will cost the Americans and their allies in the region – as well as ordinary Iraqis who might suffer the brunt of an Iranian backlash.I fear that the Middle East is going to suffer as a result of this conflict.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

Letter Published in THe National UAE on 2Jan 20 In 2020, may tolerance continue to be given as much importance I write to you in reference to the National Editorial A new decade presents new opportunities for the Middle East (December 31): 2019 might well have been the Year of Tolerance, as declared by the UAE government. But I believe tolerance is the one principle that governments all over the world should be reminding their citizens to practise diligently. This is especially important because of the troubling stories about communal and sectarian hatred we keep hearing and reading about in the media.Of course, people should take personal responsibility in ensuring that we live in a tolerant society but government does have a role in regulating behaviour – particularly if it is to the detriment of society.K Ragavan, Bengaluru
