Letter Published in The National UAE On 28 June 18The judiciary’s troubling endorsement of Trump
I refer to Charles Capel’s article Donald Trump hails ‘great victory’ over travel ban ruling (June 26). The US Supreme Court’s decision to uphold US President Donald Trump’s prohibition on granting entry to the US for nations from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen (and some officials from North Korea and Venezuela is a deeply troubling development in US politics.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 27 June 18 Mali militants killing innocent people is utter cowardice
I write in reference to your article 36 dead in militia attack on village in central Mali (June 26): the utterly brutal attacks by militants who killed 36 innocent civilians in a village in Mali, West Africa, was rightly widely condemned. Ever since 2015, the United Nations peacekeeping mission and innocent civilians have been targeted. It is entirely unacceptable. This act was also a cowardly one as the militants made sure to attack when soldiers were absent. I hope clashes like these will come to an end.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 24 June 18Parents of all incomes should be able to provide for children
I write in reference to your editorial An expensive education is not necessarily the best (June 22): The National’s thought-provoking editorial on private school fees in the UAE was both meaningful and accurate. Some schools charge fees that are 16 times higher than others and force parents to shoulder the burden. The recent decision by the UAE executive council to freeze school fees until next year was the right one. What impact it will have on the quality of education in these schools is the big question. Schools should have only the higest quality professional teachers in order to provide a decent education. But in addition, education should be affordable, allowing parents of all incomes to provide for their children’s futures.

Celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain was a well-established Master Chef, a famous CNN anchor and a good travel documentarian. He was found dead in a hotel after he took his own life. This was a great shock to the media and journalism world. People are analysing depression and have said that it may be the reason why people were taking this type of action. Not only celebrities, people from all walks of life have depression, which they may not express openly. It is a sad state of affairs.

It appears Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan is losing his grip on the recent military operations against the Kurds. Fresh presidential elections – brought forward unexpectedly by Mr Erdogan two months ago – will be held on June 24 and they will determine Turkey’s short and long-term future.Whether Mr Erdogan will return to office or not is the key question. Letter Published in The National UAE on 20 June 18 If US President takes care of his base he’ll serve two terms    I write in reference to Gavin Esler’s op-ed Voters will judge Trump on the economy, not on his moral or constitutional values (June 19): Mr Esler’s point that any national leader who is perceived to be taking care of his or her core voters may be immune to accusations surrounding his or her moral infringements is a very valid one. As such, it is very possible that US President Donald Trump’s immoral words and deeds will not affect his ability to return to office in 2020. A successful economy is very important and should make people happy and if they are, particularly the middle class, I see no reason why the leader in question should not be given a second chance.K Ragavan, Denver

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 15June 18King of hearts and votes
South Indian cinematic superstar Rajinikanth’s latest film ‘Kaala’, was released in the US recently (“Rajinikanth in numbers: What you should know”, Gulf News, June 5). The film is being released after Rajinikanth announced his newly formed party will contest the 2021 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, marking his official entry into politics. As a result, the release of Kaala received plenty of reactions from his fans, and those interested in his future political career. Reactions to the film itself have been mixed from the political parties. Overall, it has really clicked in India, particularly in Chennai. Bollywood stalwart Nana Patekar’s role in the movie was good. Over-advertising raises expectations and does not always yield positive results. But despite all the hurdles, the film is doing well. The setting and cinematography should be complimented. Will this film have an impact on Rajinikanth’s political entry? We have to wait and see.

It really is high time that people took serious steps to reduce their single-use plastic usage, start recycling more and work towards saving the environment for future generations.Already today a number of countries have started implementing policies to eliminate single-use plastics in the day to day lives of their citizens. As your editorial noted, it may soon be the case across all European Union member states. Saving the environment is an end that clearly justifies the inconveniences of doing away with plastic.K Ragavan, Denver

Iraq has overcome many hurdles in recent times, most notably the scourge of terror and suicide attacks.
At a time when the Iraqi people need stability following an election, this incident is deeply unfortunate. Politicians are demanding a re-election in order to save Iraqi democracy. This is a worthy endeavour. It is unclear what caused the fire but I am sure the Iraqi government will look into it.

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 8 June 18Rape, assault and shame
Hollywood mogul, Harvey Weinstein’s bail was set at $1 million (“Harvey Weinstein indicted on rape charges”, Gulf News, June 1). The shameful act of the producer and director came into public view and he is now facing charges. He surrendered and this is the dramatic development of the case. While we are waiting on the outcome of the case, it has been interesting to see the latest development in the Hollywood film industry. Based on the accusations, Weinstein has been charged with rape. He was subject to a lengthy investigation by New York police over the past few months. Whatever the result of any court case, it will be difficult for him to recover from all the allegations, despite his awards and achievements. All celebrities have a responsibility to safeguard their reputation and adhere to the highest standards of behaviour. Film actresses and models won’t complain against him unless and until he misbehaved with them. Despite paying the bail amount, his reputation won’t come back. It is a sad state of affairs.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 7June 18 The Indian government should prioritise its people  I am neither a political expert nor an economist but I have formulated my own impressions of democracy. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was given a big mandate in 2014 but his BJP party has since lost a string of by-elections and its support has decreased. Yet overall Mr Modi has created a good name for India abroad. India’s unemployment problem was there before, while he has tackled the informal economy to an extent.India is a vast country, comprising many states, religions, languages and parties. I am sure the BJP will take a moment to ponder the recent defeats and take steps to restore its majority in 2019. It is up to us, the voters, to send the best administrator into office next year. Whoever comes into power should work in the interest of the people by fostering development, eradicating illiteracy, caring for the impoverished and ensuring women and children are safe from abuse. As an Indian myself, these are my wishes for next year’s elections and I hope the BJP will deliver them.K Ragavan, Denver
