An inspirational figure

A few days back I was watching on TV former Indian President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam’s funeral. More than half a million people from different parts of India had come to pay their last respects to this great Leader, Scientist and above  all a wonderful human being. I was remembering one incident when I was in the UAE.

The former president was addressing a meeting in Abu Dhabi, if I am correct. During his address, he identified a driver whom he knew. He called him and discussed with him his job and family. This made me admire his simple and down-to-earth nature. He is a teacher, scientist, politician and above all a good visionary for his country’s future. He was respected by people from all walks of life, particularly students. One of the  few rare leaders who command respect. I salute this great personality.

The death of Abdul Kalam was sad and painful to read about. The demise of the 84-year-old former Indian head of state is a great loss to the world. He was liked by one and all, particularly from the student community. He was known for his simplicity, administrative talents, vast knowledge in his field and, above all, for being a wonderful human being. May he rest in peace.

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 30 July 15,Unfortunate boating accident
The Nile party boat that was hit by a cargo ship, and resulted in the death of 21 people, was a sad issue to read about. This tragic incident took place in Egypt’s Nile river when a cargo ship crashed into the engagement celebrations. This is condemned as recklessness on the part of the captain that was steering the ship. In nine years, this is the second such tragic accident. Will the Egyptian government look into it and take precautionary measures in the future?

Regarding deregulation of oil prices  .Will companies increase pay?

The deregulation will certainly cause people to take a hit. Those who are not getting the support of petrol allowances from their workplaces, will think twice before filling their fuel tanks. Public transportation and carpooling with friends may become preferred options by many. It’s also possible that many companies will not increase salaries due to this, since they have their own policies. This increase will affect salaried people, but may also help with the traffic congestion.

Is it sending the wrong message to youth if they are allowed to learn how to shoot guns? Results in murders

This gun culture is more predominant in the US. Young people should not be given licences and should be allowed to use a gun only in the shooting range with proper instructors. Because of this culture, many shooting incidents have resulted in the murder of innocent people. Gun culture aggravates vengeful attitudes. In my opinion, this should not be allowed.

Slap in the wrist
I met an old colleague of mine after a long time at a shopping complex in Bengaluru (India). This guy was working with me in my company for a decade. He is a jolly good fellow and an excellent humorist.
He used to do mimicry like our boss.
And on one such occasion, he was caught in our cycle meeting room while imitating our immediate boss. We thought he would get expelled for his act. At that time the boss only said, “I will see you soon.” We knew something was coming. As he was called to see the boss, we were praying he should be let off with a warning or a slap in the wrist.
You will be surprised at the punishment he got from the boss.
The boss handed him a small memento for his brilliant imitation act. We were surprised to see the memento.
I am yet to come cross a person like my old boss who was sportive and take things in the right spirit.
We exchanged pleasantries after a cup of tea and departed.

The new digital technology is to a certain extent threatening the old production houses, as established companies are now changing to this concept. Despite new technology and innovations, the term “old is gold” is often used by experts as they are well experienced in filmmaking, and they are the ones who were ruling the industry for decades. Digital may not take a shape.

Tribute to Omar Sharif

The other day I was watching the news of the demise of the great actor, Omar Sharif, and was shocked. A few days back I was discussing Hollywood actors with my friend and Omar Sharif figured in our conversation.

We were discussing his  remarkable movies. The Egyptian actor created a big impact in Hollywood movies particularly Doctor Zhivago, MacKenna’s Gold, Genghis Khan, wonderful Lawrence of Arabia and many more.

He was a versatile, stylish actor whom I admired.

His departure is a great loss to the film industry as well as the Egyptian people.

Men may come and men may go but a few people will be remembered for ever.

Omar Sharif occupies pride of place in the pantheon of great actors for his memorable roles.

Readers write about the international influence of Nelson Mandela on International Nelson Mandela DayChanging South Africa
There is no doubt that Mandela created a revolution, forever marking his name in South Africa’s history, and it is laudable. Even though he was described as part of a terrorist organisation in 1987 by British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, after a three-hour long discussion in 1990, he changed the image of South Africa. Even though Mandela has departed, millions of people pay tribute to this great leader who believed in peace. I salute this leader on this occasion. I read Gulf News’ story about the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) planning 100,000 meetings in the next 100 days to counter the Janata Dal-United (JD-U), headed by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar (‘BJP targets 100,000 meetings in 100 days’, Gulf News, July 10). On the one hand, I applaud the BJP’s strategy to hold 100,000 meetings, but on the other hand, they should realise that getting a majority is not going to secure a permanent position — neither in the centre, nor in the state. Only delivering with a non-corrupt government can remain forever. The recent scams have damaged the party’s integrity and reputation. Will they overcome this and enter into the much-talked about state of Bihar? We have to wait and see.

Gulf News recently reported on the high court decision in India to defer a hearing on the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) (‘Vyapam deaths: Court defers hearing’, Gulf News, July 9). The probe into the Vyapam scam has become more sensitive because of the deaths. Whatever be the explanation from the Chief Minister, this scam is a really big one from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government. All parties are corrupt and the degree only varies. One scam goes; another scam is waiting for the Opposition parties to agitate over. The Chief Minister should speed up this burning issue and bring out the real truth so that the guilty can be punished. Education is an area that should not be interfered with as it will affect the quality of education. It’s a sad state of affairs going on and the common man is the one who suffers most because of the economy being affected with corruption and inflation.

Amazing Aamir

I am not very regular when it comes to watching motives, but the other day when my friend called me to watch Bollywood hero Aamir Khan’s PK, I readily agreed. Though I had watched the movie already, I went again because of Aamir Khan’s marvellous acting skills and the film’s powerful social message. Movies not only make one happy but also help pass time fruitfully if there is a good message and engaging entertainment. I remembered that so many of my friends in the UAE when I worked there were diehard Aamir Khan fans.
