Letter Published in BM on 30May 19 Mandya’s road ahead with Sumalatha
K Ragavan writes the recent interaction of Mandya candidate Sumalatha with BM was nice to read. Sumalatha’s massive victory from Mandya is historical. Her decision to let the people of her constituency decide on whether she is to join a party or not, sounds logical. They are the one who voted for her and her asking them for suggestion means she values her people

Smriti Irani's immediate arrival on the spot and participation in the last rites of Surendra Singh was admirable. No one should politicise this moment. Other than a political leader Irani has demonstrated that she is also a good human being. Respect for the worker is laudable.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 29May 19High turnout for EU elections is a good sign for democracy
I write to you in reference to Gavin Esler’s opinion piece Being on the European campaign trail brought out the worst of us – and the best (May 27).
As Mr Esler rightly pointed out, some people feel the European Union does not represent them and are disenfranchised as a result. That partly explains the process leading to Brexit.
The high turnout for these elections is therefore extremely positive to see.
The UK is still facing the consequences of the Brexit referendum today, as Prime Minister Theresa May herself realised when she had to resign over her failure to deliver a deal.
Will the UK’s new prime minister finally prioritise the interests of British people? Only time will tell.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 28May 19 Congress must take stock of its crushing defeat at the polls
I write to you in reference to Samanth Subramanian’s article To reverse decline, must India’s Congress party ditch its dynasty? (May 27).
This article about the crushing defeat of Congress during the recent Indian elections was truly insightful. Despite Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s offer to resign his post, members of his party refused to let him step down. I was truly surprised to see this as he did not show great leadership during the election campaign and his party got very bad results.
Senior leaders such as Gulam Nabi Azad wish to retain Mr Gandhi and keep him in his current position, which shows that Congress loyalists have not learned anything from their overwhelming defeat at the polls.
There are many senior leaders in the Congress party who could do a better job than Mr Gandhi but they are forced to take a back seat, as he drives his party over a cliff. Dynasties continue to wreak havoc in Indian politics.

In reference to your story Egypt’s El Sisi opens record-setting bridge over the Nile (May 25) what a lovely story to come across.
The world’s widest suspension bridge is a laudable symbol of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s vision and will become a centrepiece of the famous river Nile.
After the recent terror attacks, Egypt is slowly recovering and tourists are once again waking up to its ancient charms and attractions.
This additional new bridge will certainly pave the way for a bright and hopefully prosperous future and economic outlook.

Shameful words

I can’t forgive Indian politician Pragya Singh Thakur for insulting Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (“BJP politician Pragya Singh Thakur calls Gandhi’s assassin ‘a patriot’”, Gulf News, May 17). The recent comments made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member on political activist Nathuram Godse being a patriot of India, is condemned. Godse assassinated Gandhi in 1948. Thakur created sensational news. Political leaders should be very careful when they speak out on a public platform.

I write to you in reference to Arthur MacMillan’s article Iraq finally exiting the Saddam era, UN envoy says (May 22).
As Mr MacMillan rightly mentioned in his article, Iraq is completely changing its strategy ever since the new government came to power.
Since the early 2000s, the country has undergone a massive transformation.
Iraq used to be a brutal dictatorship under Saddam Hussein and briefly became an ISIS-held territory. It is now finally a democratic regime.
Iraqis deserve to have peace and freedom after all those years of hardship.

I write to you in reference to your article Outrage over BJP candidate’s praise for Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin (May 17).
The recent comments by BJP candidate Pragya Singh Thakur, condoning Nathuram Godse, the assassin who killed India’s founding father Mahatma Gandhi, is simply appalling. Mrs Thakur referred to Gandhi’s killer as a patriot, a horrific comment which gave the opportunity for opposing parties to criticise the ruling NDA Government.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned her comment. Political leaders should be very careful about what they say in public, as others could be enticed to act upon their comments. Although Mrs Thakur later apologised, her comment has distressed people all over India and only contributed to fuel hate.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 20May 19Politicians must use their public platforms wisely
I write in reference to your recent article Outrage over BJP candidate’s praise over Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin (May 17). It was a very upsetting piece to read.
The comment made by the controversial BJP candidate Pragya Singh Thakur about Nathuram Godse, the killer of the father of modern India, Mahatma Gandhi, is utterly contemptible and to be condemned. For a politician to refer to a cold-blooded killer as a patriot is disgraceful.
Unsurprisingly, her remarks provided a sensational opportunity for opposition parties to criticise the current government. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also disavowed her comment.
Political leaders should be very careful about what they choose to say from their very public platforms.
Even though Ms Thakur has since apologised, that does not seem to be enough to make up for this reprehensible statement.

This meaningful and thought-provoking article about the ongoing Indian elections has shed light on the worrying verbal attacks that politicians have indulged in.
During these elections, the contenders have failed to rely on their ideas to sway public opinion, so instead they competed to see who could come up with the most inflammatory comment. This war of words should be stopped as it benefits no one. Politicians and their supporters, should learn to

In Indian, in the recent Lok Sabha (lower house of the Indian parliament) election meetings, many political parties have used religion as a trump card. Religion is a personal affair, not a tool to win elections with. Politics is an uncertain business and luck plays a big role. At Narendra Modi’s recent rally in Varanasi, tens of thousands of supporters turned out to hear him speak. And yet, this is a tough time for Modi. While his well-wishers are confident that he will overcome the hurdle and win this election, many economists and analysts feels his one term tenure is not enough to fulfill his commitments.
