Letter Published in The National UAE on 1April  The militancy of the Taliban remains a potent threat  I write in reference to your article Afghan vice president narrowly escapes death for a second time(March 31). Your piece on the recent escape of the Afghan vice president was eye-opening and sad to read. The constant looming threat of violence and terror is something Afghanistan’s rulers and people have been facing for years. This was the second time the vice president, Abdul Rashid Dostum, has survived an attempt on his life and the Taliban have claimed responsibility for this attack, which left one of his bodyguards dead. Despite the international community’s intervention in the country, the militancy of Taliban appears to be again on the rise. This is an unacceptable and deeply sad state of affairs indeed.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 1April 19 Party politics
The entry into Bharatiya janata Party (BJP) by former Indian cricketer, Gautam Gambhir, is a good development for the BJP. He is a man known for his philanthropic nature and straight forward pwersonality. This will be an asset for the party. Gambhir’s timely decision makes BJP little stronger. One of the patriotic personalities, Gambhir will certainly bring laurels to the party if he stands for the coming Lok Sabha elections in Delhi. People with long-term vision and non-corrupt administration prefer the present administration in India, and Gambhir is no exemption. Kudos to Gambhir for his timely decision.

Former British prime minister Gordon Brown’s meaningful and thought-provoking article on the global order was enlightening.I was happy to read his thoughts on cyber security as this is an issue many are unfamiliar with and does not often make headlines.I particularly enjoyed his take on international issues, such as US-China rivalry in the age of technology.Overall I think he made some excellent points.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

Letter Published in BM on 26Mar 19  Every citizen must chip in for the city K Ragavan writes the elected civic body is not taking care of problems, which is a sad state of affairs. Both talented teams have miserably failed to perform well in the T20 match. I was truly disappointed by that match. The Chennai Chepalk stadium is known for great players like Mr Koli, which is why Watson’s failure was surprising.Even though Rayudu and Raina brought the figure to the victory line, the scores from both teams was unsatisfying. This is the worst score for the IPL in a long time. Letter Published in KhaleejTimes UAE on 24Mar 19 Gambhir should contest elections  The news of former cricket stalwart Gautam Gambhir joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is a good development (KT web, March 22). Gambhir is known for his charity work and straightforwardness. Both these qualities will be an asset for the BJP. One more chowkidar (gatekeeper) is added to the BJP's list. This is a timely decision by the young cricketer, and will give make the BJP stronger. He could rake in votes for the party if he is allowed to contest in the Lok Sabha elections from Delhi. Indians who prefer a non-corrupt administration and have a vision for India are likely to prefer the present administration. Gautam Gambhir's inclusion in the BJP team simply shows how young Indians support the party and want to work for the future of the country. - K. Ragavan, Bengaluru, India

Letter Published in The National UAE on 24Mar 19   Idai survivors need our help today and in the long run
I write to you in reference to your editorial Long-term aid is crucial in the wake of Idai (March 23).
Cyclone Idai has flooded Mozambique’s port city of Beira as well as other areas of the countries. This tragedy that has swept through southern Africa also hit Zimbabwe, Malawi and parts of Madagascar.
I was truly shocked to hear that more than 1,000 people are thought to have died. In the aftermath of the cyclone, millions have lost their homes and loved ones.
I truly hope that those who are still stranded will soon get the help they desperately need, as access to the flooded areas remains very difficult.
However, I do not think that giving emergency aid alone will solve the crisis. Long-term solutions must be provided by the international community to help rebuild devastated regions in these struggling southern African countries.

K Ragavan writes the story ‘I will tell my kids I poured hot water on myself’ was touching. It is sad that harassment of women is continuing in our country. It is the bad habits of husbands that are landing wives in trouble. This person was harassing his wife for money, which she did not have. Despite his brutal act, his wife does not wish to see him handcuffed, which shows the love and affection she has for him. However, his act is unacceptable in the civil society like ours and he should be punished. What impressed me about this brutal incident, is that she does not want to share this ugly incident with her kids. Such women should be remembered and respected.

LetterPublished in The National UAE on 12 Mar 19 Turnout is bound to increase in India’s April elections Letter.I write in reference to your article Indian general election to begin voting on April 11 (March 11). Himendra Mohan Kumar’s article on the fast approaching Indian general elections was a riveting read. Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to all his countrymen to turn out in large numbers to exercise their right to vote. This time round, the election battle is certain to be very tough and I am personally confident that the voter turnout will increase on the 65.4 per cent witnessed in 2014. If Mr Modi retains his position as prime minister, overcoming Congress’s young, dynastic leader Rahul Gandhi, that will be an important victory for his agenda and legacy. But whether Mr Modi can actually deliver on many of the promises he made in 2014 remains to be seen. The electoral commission will deploy soldiers on election day to protect the voting booths. The UAE’s decision, reiterated last week by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, to re-open its embassy in Syria is a good one. Letter Published in The National UAE on 6Mar 19 Peace is only possible if Pakistan fights terror groups  I refer to Rashmee Roshan Lall’s article Amid all the turmoil, peace could break out between India and Pakistan (March 4). This comment piece elaborately expresses the need for the ongoing crisis between India and Pakistan to finally end. Despite a gesture by Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan, who decided to release a captured Indian pilot, tensions escalated again in Kashmir just a few days later.I find this infuriating and unacceptable. Militant groups in Pakistan have been crossing the Line of Control and attacking Indian soldiers and civilians. Pakistan should put a stop to this unnecessary violence.Pakistanis are starting to feel the consequences of their Prime Minister’s lax control of terror groups in their country. Releasing the Indian pilot as an act of good faith is not enough. Imran Khan should seriously work on eradicating terror groups operating within Pakistan altogether, only then will India take his appeal for dialogue seriously. The ball is in Imran Khan’s court and I hope he will make the right decision.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

Elevated roads are a good idea but they take a long time to be built and traffic is affected for the duration. It should be done with planning and foresight to cause least inconvenience

Letter Published in The National UAE on 5Mar 19Social media shouldn’t hinder fairness of Indian electionsI write in reference to your article Can India curb the impact of social media fake news on its election?(March 4). Social media platforms Facebook and Twitter have been blamed for their involvement in the dissemination of fake news and misinformation in the 2016 elections in the US. Fortunately, the Indian government is taking serious measures to curb this.Already Twitter has been warned, while action has been taken against Facebook and WhatsApp for the spread of dangerous misinformation on their platforms. Since elections are not far away – and look to be extremely close – the government of Narendra Modi is hoping for a fair and transparent democratic process. I hope it will achieve that.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

Letter Published in The National UAE on 4Mar The OIC summit is a symbol of co-operation for the region
I refer to your editorial The OIC provides a model of co-operation and self-determination for the Islamic world (March 2).The Organisation of Islamic Co-operation’s latest meeting in Abu Dhabi has proven that constructive decision-making is indeed possible.
The main objective of this meeting was not only economic, as Muslim nations agreed to cooperate on scientific, humanitarian and technological issues.
I am also very happy to read that India was a guest of honour at the OIC and that the country voiced its concerns over the terror attacks that are threatening its borders today.
I am confident this meeting will bring further cooperation on global issues such as terrorism.

Letter Published in BM on 3 Mar 19 Time to get martyrs’ memorial to NMM
K Ragavan has responded to the story ‘They are chipping away at memorial for our martyrs’. He writes the story elaborates on the importance of memorial for martyrs. Bengalureans have been eagerly waiting to see the 78-foot monolith to be installed in National Military Memorial to honour our martyrs for more than eight years. This would be a good gesture by the state government for our soldiers and particularly in the light of the recent events and the return of Abhinandan

Letter Published in KhaleejTimes UAE on 3 Mar 19No one wants war
The release of Indian pilot by Pakistan authorities was a good development. It indicates the progress being made in the relations between the two countries and raises hopes of dialogue.
Three countries, namely the US, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, should be commended for their influence in dissuading the two governments from escalating tensions. Ultimately, no country wants war. Pakistan should work at eradicating terror from its soil.
