Letter Publissshed in The National UAE on 28Nov 19 It is important to preserve the rules-based order in the West
I write in reference to Rashmee Roshan Lall’s article Amid preparations for Nato’s 70th anniversary summit, no one seems sure about where Europe should be heading (November 26): it is troubling to read about people questioning the wisdom of the formation of organisations such as the European Union and Nato. These are blocs that were created after the end of the Second World War in order to build and preserve a rules-based international order.
These collaborations are being given another look by present-day leaders with no credible alternative solutions at their disposal. I just hope better sense prevails among politicians and organisations like the EU and Nato are preserved.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 27 Nov 19 Pope Francis is right: humans can inflict great pain on each other This is with regard to the article Pope Francis calls for world leaders to abandon nuclear weapons (November 24): Claire Corkery’s piece was a comprehensive read. In his recent visit to Japan, Pope Francis laid a wreath at a site in Nagasaki in memory of the 74,000 victims of the bomb and called it a reminder “of the pain and horror that we human beings are capable of inflicting upon one another”. These are wise words. The pope appealed to world leaders to ban nuclear weapons. This is a good call urging leaders across the globe to take positive action. However, will international leaders listen to the request of the pontiff?Pope Francis laid a second wreath in memory of 26 Nagasaki martyrs, who were crucified in 1597 at the start of the two-century wave of anti-Christian persecution by Japanese rulers. He then travelled to Hiroshima to the site where the first atomic bomb was dropped three days before the attack on Nagasaki, killing at least 140,000 people.War, fighting and attacking one another is never a solution. The pope’s appeal for world peace is laudable.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

Letter Published in The National UAE on 26Nov 19 Iraqi citizens deserve stable governance and security
With regard to your story Thirteen protesters killed in southern Iraq as turmoil intensifies (November 24): the coverage of the turmoil in the oil-rich nation of Iraq has been extensive. The number of protesters killed has increased.
The attack by the security forces is not justifiable and the Human Rights Commission has a moral and official responsibility to investigate the matter.
It is high time that a stable government is appointed in the country and the people given an assurance of good governance.
The basic needs of the people must be met.
But we will have to wait and see whether Iraq’s future takes a good turn or whether these atrocities continue much longer.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 25Nov 19 Let’s hope Hong Kong’s election restores calm and order to the city
Regarding Shawn Yuan’s article After months of shouting, Hong Kong citizens speak through the ballot (November 23), after five months of protests, the people of Hong Kong are getting a chance to be heard. The district council elections held on Sunday could be a game-changer for the troubled island.
Let’s hope the elections help find a peaceful solution to months of woes and the right candidate is chosen who can resolve Hong Kong’s many problems. We can only hope there are calmer times ahead and this marks a turning point but optimism alone might not be enough.

Letter Published in BM on 24 Nov 19Bring fake swami to country, punish him
K Ragavan writes BM’s cover story on the controversial swami Nityananda was thought provoking (The impregnable swami). Today many fake swamis are around and Nityananda is among them. Surprisingly no one knows what charm he has for his female devotees. A few years back TV and film actress Ranjitha’s complaint that she was raped by the swamy. And now his Ahmedabad ashram has also been raided. His departure from the country is the latest surprise. Such swamis are dangerous to the society for their behavior with devotees especially women. He should be brought back to India and booked for his immoral and other activities

Letter Published in The National UAE on 24Nov 19Benjamin Netanyahu should do the right thing and step down
With reference to the article Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defiant after corruption indictment (November 21). This was an interesting read. The ongoing threat to the position of Mr Netanyahu with allegations of corruption, fraud and breach of trust is the latest dramatic development from Israeli politics.
In principle, Mr Netanyahu should either step down or prove his innocence to retain office.

Letter Published in BM on 21Nov 19 Letter.Govt has failed to manage funds well
With reference to the story ‘Bangalore Development Authority leads citizens up the garden paths’, K Ragavan writes that the fate of 53 parks for development is hanging for the want of funds shows that funds were not allocated properly. Parks are spaces for relaxation for senior citizens and for children to play around for good exercise, so failing to build them is a huge loss. The government would not have to cite shortage of funds if it had managed the funds well.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 20Nov 19Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed helped keep alive UAE’s cultural heritage
I write to you in reference to your article Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed, brother of President Sheikh Khalifa, dies (November 18): the demise of Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed is a great loss to the UAE and its people. Judging by the fact that his name was trending on social media, it is evident that the people will miss the second son of Sheikh Zayed, the UAE’s Founding Father. Sheikh Sultan did much for the country, especially with regard to its rich heritage. The Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan Heritage Festival, of which he was a patron, included camel and saluki races, a camel beauty contest and traditional markets that sold handicrafts and hosted traditional activities. May his soul rest in peace.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 19Nov 19 There is a direct link between access to guns and violenceI write to you in reference to Janine di Giovanni’s article After yet another school shooting, America needs a national epiphany on gun control (November 17): it is heart-wrenching to keep reading news about shootings in the US. That there has been more than one gun-related death per day this year should be unacceptable to all the country’s citizens.I appreciate the argument that these shootings are sometimes carried out by people with mental disorders but it is not rocket science for the public to understand that there is a direct link between gun violence and public access to weapons in the market. One need only compare the death toll in the US with those in other countries to realise that it is not all down to mental health. The Trump administration should not drag its feet on this problem. It must tackle it now.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

Letter Published in The National UAE on 18Nov 19 Lebanon needs young and inspired leaders to get it back on track
I write to you in reference to your editorial Lebanon’s new leaders must reflect the concerns of a young generation (November 16): for far too long the people of Lebanon have been subjected to the same old politics of divide and rule. But now they have come together and demanded change with one voice. The result of consecutive days of demonstrations has been the resignation of top government officials. The challenge for the next leadership team, whenever it is ready to take over, will be to get the country’s economy back on track. In the short term, people need young and inspired administrators to deliver to them good governance. The question in the long run is whether Lebanon can be returned to its original place in the world – as a link between the East and the West. This should no doubt be a vision of the next generation of leaders.

K Ragavan writes with reference to ‘Metro takes its toll on yet another city road’ that it is sad that due to rains and heavy traffic connectivity of RV and Silk Board Roads is broken. Despite the residents’ complaints, BMRCL made it clear to BBMP that the road cannot be fixed before March 2020. Of course there may be technical reasons, but lack of proper planning also should be blamed for this

Letter Published in The National UAE  on 17Nov 19 Homework can wait; these are the best times in children’s lives  Anam Rizvi’s article Dubai parents want more play time and less homework for pupils (November 15) was a good read. Today’s education system lays too much emphasis on homework and too many schools allot endless assignments to students, who barely get any time to play.I am happy Dubai parents are opposed to more homework and want schools to give students more time to play. The concept of free time is important for any individual, even more so in children’s growing years. Schools must prioritise time for relaxation. Here in my home city, the principle of easing up on homework is slowly catching on. Children must have time for leisure and not be overburdened with assignments by their class teachers.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

Letter Published in BM on 15Nov 19Education is key to bridge all gaps
K Ragavan writes, the Kerala student Al Ameen Anzari who joined BBA first year was brutally ragged by 15students and took the bullies extorted Rs 3,000 for him. Is this the cost of education? This is strictly unacceptable and the education authorities should look into the matter and bring in strict measures to ensure such incidents do not reoccur. The case of seniors bullying juniors is not new and it’s a shame that we still have not found a solution to the menace of society. Education is key to bridge the differences between everyone in society and the country to should ensure that we are better enlightened than the previous generation. I fear that young men and women who leave home and suffer such humiliation will now have to live a life that could be of dejection and lack of confidence. Instead of creating a safe environment, the education institutes are an environment of toxicity and cause of trauma for many young minds

Letter Published in The National UAE on 13Nov 19 The violence and killings on the streets of Iraq must end now This is with reference to Mina Aldroubi and Pesha Magid’s article Iraqi government criticised at UN meeting as protest deaths continue (November 12): it was a very informative read.It is completely unacceptable and a travesty that despite the Iraqi security forces defending their actions against protesters and the government banning the use of live ammunition, four more people were killed and 130 wounded. How much more blood needs to be spilled for the concerned authorities to reach a resolution? The protesters’ demands must be met and the killings must stop. Will the United Nations and other international organisations intervene in Iraq? Delhi gas chamber

Air pollution has turned Delhi in to a gas chamber, and this was a meaningful article to read (“Explained: Air pollution has turned Delhi into a gas chamber”, Gulf News November 5). It was also thought provoking. The crisis in the Indian capital has been nicely analysed and shows how millions of people are facing a tough time. There are many reasons why this situation is getting aggravated and it is because many sugar cane manufacturers are burning the waste material, causing a lot of smoke to spread to the cities. Pollution from vehicles is also another factor for this. Even though the Indian government is doing something to curb the problem, the issue is grave. Children going to school are also badly affected by this smog. It is high time the government of India should address this issue permanently.

I write to you in reference to your article Billionaire Michael Bloomberg considers entering 2020 presidential race (November 8).
Billionaire media mogul Michael Bloomberg is considering entering the 2020 presidential elections, quite late in the race to the presidency.
I believe that Mr Bloomberg needs to have a viable strategy against other democratic contenders, whom he believes do not have what it takes to take down US President Donald Trump.
I wonder if Mr Bloomberg will truly enter the presidential race and if so, will he be able to win the hearts of the American people as US democratic candidate? Only time will tell.

Letter Publishedin The National UAE on 7Nov 19 Letter.Workplace relationships are simply unethical
I write to you in reference to McDonald's CEO Steve Easterbrook dismissed over relationship with employee (November 4). McDonald's CEO has been fired because of an affair he had with one of his employees. This is highly unethical, as his subordinate may have felt pressured into getting in a relationship with her boss. The MeToo movement was launched specifically to address these issues but unfortunately there is still a lot of work to be done so that women are not harassed at work.
I find Mr Easterbrook's behaviour deplorable, although he at least admitted the error of his ways in an email to his employees. Employees should be treated with dignity and respect, and made to feel comfortable and safe at work whatever their gender.

The editorial ‘Gas chamber’ Delhi: urgent action needed to cut pollution (November 5) was meaningful and thought-provoking. The capital’s ongoing crisis was nicely analysed, especially the bit about how millions of city dwellers – from vegetable vendors to rickshaw-pullers – face a tough time. One aggravating cause is the waste that is burnt by farmers and which causes smoke to spread to the city. The government must implement more stringent measures to control pollution levels.
