 Small Story 786

Respecting Individual Choices and Valuing Friendships

Rakesh reluctantly accepted Suresh's invitation and came to his house for a party. Normally, Rakesh avoided attending parties because he strictly followed a Jain diet and preferred eating only pure Jain food. He was particular about his food habits and rarely ate outside.

Suresh and his other friends warmly welcomed him. Suresh had organised the party to celebrate his son's marriage, which had taken place in the United States the previous week. His son had married an American girl. Unfortunately, Suresh could not attend the wedding because of an unavoidable meeting at his office. He had therefore invited a few close friends to share his happiness and celebrate the occasion.

All the friends congratulated Suresh on becoming the father-in-law of an American girl. At 55, Suresh was a smart and well-presented electrical engineer. His wife was a paediatrician, and their only son, Vishwa, was a software engineer.

During the gathering, Suresh explained how Vishwa had met the American girl, how their friendship gradually developed into a close relationship, and how they eventually decided to get married.

"When my son informed me about his decision and asked for my approval, my wife and I told him that it was his future and his life. If both of them understood each other and could lead a happy life together, we would be happy to accept his decision. He was delighted with our response, and we gave him our blessings," Suresh explained.

All the friends appreciated Suresh and his wife's broad-minded attitude. They agreed that parents should respect their children's decisions regarding marriage, provided the couple understood each other and were prepared to build a responsible and happy life together.

After an enjoyable conversation, everyone sat down to enjoy a delicious dinner arranged by a professional caterer. Nearly twenty-five friends, both men and women, attended the celebration.

Suresh had made special arrangements for Rakesh, keeping his strict Jain food preferences in mind. A separate selection of delicious Jain dishes, along with some of his favourite sweets, had been prepared especially for him.

Rakesh was pleasantly surprised and thanked Suresh for the thoughtful arrangements.

Suresh came closer and whispered, "Rakesh, I know your food habits and your principles. I also know how particular you are about maintaining them. That is why my wife made special arrangements, especially for you. We missed your wife, too, as she has gone to Rajasthan to attend a relative's wedding."

Rakesh was deeply touched by Suresh's consideration and personal attention.

One of their friends, Ramesh, proposed the vote of thanks. He appreciated Suresh for respecting his son's decision about marriage and, at the same time, remembering Rakesh's food preferences and making special arrangements for him.

He added that true friendship was not merely about inviting people to celebrations but also about understanding their individual preferences and respecting their personal values.

Everyone appreciated Ramesh's words. The evening ended on a happy note, with all the guests thanking Suresh and leaving with a large box of sweets.

The gathering conveyed a beautiful message: **Respecting our children's choices reflects our understanding, while respecting our friends' preferences reflects our affection. True relationships become stronger when we value individual differences and care for one another.**
