Small Story 787
The Importance of a Second Opinion
Suganya was waiting for her doctor to return from her hospital rounds at a speciality hospital in Bengaluru. After completing her rounds, Dr. Nandhini arrived and greeted Suganya warmly. The nurse then requested Suganya to go inside the doctor's cabin.
"Doctor, how is my mother's condition? We are all very worried about the earlier medical reports, as she has been diagnosed with throat cancer. You have gone through all the reports, haven't you?" Suganya asked anxiously.
Dr. Nandhini and Suganya were good friends. Besides practising as a dental surgeon, Dr. Nandhini was also involved in cancer-related research.
Suganya was a software engineer who had recently been transferred from Madurai to Bengaluru. She lived with her husband, and her 74-year-old mother was also staying with them.
While in Madurai, Suganya had consulted several doctors regarding her mother's health problems. After conducting various scans and medical investigations, the doctors had concluded that her mother was suffering from throat cancer.
However, Suganya was not fully convinced and wanted to obtain a second opinion. Meanwhile, she was transferred to Bengaluru and immediately contacted her friend Dr. Nandhini. She shared all the previous medical reports and requested her to review them.
Dr. Nandhini had asked Suganya to meet her that day because she wanted to discuss the reports with her Chief, who was a specialist in throat cancer.
Dr. Nandhini smiled reassuringly and said, "Suganya, my Chief has carefully examined all the reports. He has identified an error in the interpretation of the earlier findings. The previous conclusion was incorrect. mother is suffering only from a throat infection and not cancer. You can bring her to the hospital tomorrow. My Chief will personally examine her and explain everything.
"He has also appreciated the efforts of the doctors who conducted the earlier investigations. However, a small error in their interpretation has unfortunately led to an unnecessary complication and considerable anxiety for your family.
"So, please tell your mother not to worry. After Deepavali, bring her here for a detailed consultation with my Chief. Let her remain happy and relaxed. I know how fond she is of Mysore Pak, so I have bought some for her after discussing her reports with my Chief."
Suganya was overwhelmed with happiness and relief. She immediately hugged her dear friend and said, "Thank you so much, Nandhini! Your support means a lot to me. This experience has taught me an important lesson. Seeking a second opinion is always worthwhile, particularly when it concerns our health and the lives of our loved ones. Even when medical investigations and reports are carried out with great care, a small error in interpretation can sometimes make a significant difference."
Dr. Nandhini smiled and replied, "Absolutely! The most important thing is to ensure that patients receive the right diagnosis and appropriate treatment at the right time."
Suganya left the hospital with a peaceful mind, carrying not only the Mysore Pak but also a valuable lesson about friendship, medical responsibility and the importance of seeking a second opinion.
