Letter Published in The National UAE ON 13Aug 18 Regarding your story The brilliant but troubling legacy of VS Naipaul (August 12), the recent demise of the 85-year-old author, who won the Nobel prize for literature, was very sad to read. This legend was known for his creative and literary works, both in fiction and non-fiction, and had a literary canon that was laudable.Out of the 30 books he wrote over a remarkable career, A Bend in the River was a masterpiece. He was acknowledged as a classic novelist and a world-class writer. The Trinidad-born Laureate’s departure is a great loss to the world of literature. May his soul rest in peace.K Ragavan, Bengalaru

Letter Published in The National UAE on 12Aug 18 Karunanidhi is a great loss in polarised Indian politicsThe death of M Karunanidhi, former five-time chief minister of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is a great loss to Indian politics. He was known for his disciplined stand on Hindu nationalism as an opposition politician as well as his versatile writing in Tamil cinema scripts and powerful speeches. His scripts were famous for their powerful dialogue.Karunanidhi was well regarded by all political parties. He was the longstanding leader and cornerstone of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party for 50 years. In Tamil Nadu itself, he was instrumental in crafting the state’s wonderful transport system, when he was the transport minister. Many leaders across the country respected him for his impressive administration and many flocked to hear his great speeches in Tamil. Karunanidhi is a great loss. I always admired him, even though I do not belong to any political party. May his soul rest in peace.K Ragavan, Bangalore

Letter published in Bangalore Mirror Bangalore on 10Aug 18No drinking water for schoolchildren?
Provision of safe and adequate drinking water in schools is mandatory. However, not many schools in the state receive good potable water. And the Centre says there has been no proposal from state officials to introduce reverse-osmosis (RO) drinking water machines in all schools. It's sad that many schools are not getting potable water. The state government has installed many RO machines along with many NGOs. Ultimately, school children should get safe drinking water to avoid health-related diseases. It's shocking to hear a department official saying that there is no such budget allocation to provide RO machines in schools. Fix such issues, says K Ragavan
