Small Story 643:
A Purposeful Journey
Arumugam arrived at Palani Railway Station, where his friend Muthu was waiting outside to receive him. They greeted each other warmly. Arumugam and Muthu had been close friends and colleagues, having worked together for twenty memorable years in the same oil company in Dubai. After taking voluntary retirement at the age of fifty-five, Arumugam settled in Chennai, while Muthu made his home in Palani.
As Muthu drove them home, the two friends reminisced about their years in Dubai and the experiences they had shared. Time seemed to fly as they recalled old memories, friendships, and happy moments from the past.
Arumugam's only daughter was married and settled in Germany, while Muthu's daughter lived in Singapore. Soon, they arrived at Muthu's beautiful independent house, located about three kilometers from Palani city, which he had built a few years earlier.
Inside the house, Muthu introduced an elderly gentleman seated on the sofa.
"Arumugam, this is Mr. Madhavan. He and my brother worked together in the same advertising company, where he served as an Advertisement Manager. He arrived yesterday after visiting the Madurai Alagar Temple."
Arumugam respectfully greeted him.
"Hello, sir."
Madhavan, now seventy years old, smiled warmly and blessed him.
"Muthu has told me a lot about your friendship and your visit to Palani Temple," he said.
After tea and breakfast, Muthu's wife, Brindha, asked, "How is your wife and the rest of your family?"
"Everyone is doing well," Arumugam replied softly.
A little later, Muthu mentioned, "Mr. Madhavan will be leaving for Chennai by the evening train."
"Yes," Madhavan replied. "The purpose of my visit to Palani has been fulfilled. My son-in-law, who worked in Dubai as a Chief Accountant in an audit firm, purchased a plot from a reputed health resort company near Oddanchatram nearly fifteen years ago. He now wishes to sell it and use the proceeds to establish a trust for financially challenged yet academically talented students."
He continued, "Last week, I sent the property documents to Muthu. He took great effort to help us sell the land at an excellent price because the area has developed significantly over the years."
Muthu smiled and shook his head.
"I have done nothing special. It is the blessing of Lord Murugan of Palani that made everything possible."
Arumugam nodded in agreement.
"There is no doubt about that. In fact, that is one of the reasons I came here for darshan, even though my wife is currently abroad."
In the evening, Madhavan departed for Chennai. Muthu accompanied him to the railway station. Before boarding the train, Madhavan held Muthu's hand and said softly,
"Your help will brighten the future of many deserving students."
Muthu smiled silently as the train slowly moved out of the station, carrying with it the satisfaction of a journey that had truly served a noble purpose.
Moral
The greatest journeys are not measured by the distance traveled, but by the opportunities and hope they create for others.
