Small Story 388.

Small Story 388 Pension Encounter Somu came to the office and never expected the mail waiting in his inbox. It was from Suganya — the girl he had loved for two years since their college days. He had always dreamed of marrying her. In her message, Suganya explained with a heavy heart that her father, Mr. Narayan, was not interested in accepting Somu as his son-in-law. The reason? Somu was not a government employee. Suganya said she felt helpless. Somu was shocked. He had been confident that Suganya’s parents, Narayan and Prema, would accept him — after all, he had visited their home three times and even had lunch with them. Suganya liked him too. But her father had an old-fashioned belief: a son-in-law must be a government employee to ensure future pension and security. Being a retired government officer himself, Mr. Narayan held on to that idea strongly. Somu, on the other hand, was a Marketing Coordinator at a top pharmaceutical company, well-known for producing vaccines and TB drugs supplied to many government hospitals. His job was stable, and the pay was good — but it didn’t come with a government pension. After a week of disappointment, Somu pushed aside his emotions and focused on his work. His parents consoled him, saying that if it was destiny, Suganya would return to his life. Then, one evening, out of the blue, Somu received a phone call from none other than Mr. Narayan himself. He said he would be visiting Somu’s home that evening. At 6 PM sharp, Narayan, his wife Prema, and Suganya arrived at Somu’s home — carrying fruits and sweets. After coffee and snacks, Narayan began speaking. "Please don’t mistake me for my earlier decision," he said sincerely. "My old friend Ramnath, who retired as a Director from your company, came to visit me yesterday. While we were talking, he shared some news. This week, your company is being taken over by the government — something I had once recommended during my service. And now, all the employees, including you, will be eligible for a pension scheme!" Somu and his parents were surprised. Narayan continued, "The news is confirmed in today’s paper. Ramnath also told me that my future son-in-law is going to be the Branch Manager of the Bangalore office. I’m truly sorry for my earlier decision. Let’s forget the past. We are sammandhis now — and your son will also be a pensioner in the future!" Suganya smiled and nodded, adding softly, "My dad’s friend gave a very good opinion about you. This news made him so happy. His wish was fulfilled." Somu smiled back, realizing that sometimes, all it takes is a twist of fate — and a little pension — to bring love back. K.Ragavan 4-10-25
