Small Story 392.
Small Story 392
A Chance Encounter of Kindness and Connection
Vasanth was walking along the road platform when he noticed a senior citizen speaking with an auto driver. Curious, he walked a little closer.
“What’s the issue, driver?” Vasanth asked politely.
“Sir, this man has forgotten his wallet,” the driver replied. “He’s asking for my GPay number so he can send the fare from home. I told him—why not ask someone from home to send it?”
The elderly man turned to Vasanth and whispered, “My wife has gone to a function. I came to the bazaar to buy some goods but forgot my wallet at home.”
“Don’t worry,” Vasanth said reassuringly. He turned to the driver and asked, “How much is the fare?”
“Thirty-six rupees,” the driver replied.
Vasanth immediately paid the amount.
“Thank you,” the old man said softly. “I’ll send you the money by this evening.”
“No problem at all,” Vasanth smiled. “But how will you get home from here?”
“I’ll walk—it’s just a fifteen-minute walk from here. Please give me your number on a piece of paper.”
“No need,” Vasanth said kindly. “Where do you live?”
“Second Stage, near the temple.”
“That’s nearby! I also live close by. I’ll drop you.”
They walked together, chatting as they went. When they reached Murthy’s house, Vasanth was impressed—it was a beautiful independent home, well-kept and peaceful. Murthy invited him inside and went to retrieve his phone from the charger to transfer the money.
“I’ll bring you some juice,” Murthy said warmly, stepping into the kitchen.
As Vasanth waited, he looked around the spacious hall. His eyes landed on a framed photograph on the wall—and he was surprised. It was his college classmate, Suganthy!
When Murthy returned, Vasanth asked with a smile, “Where is your daughter? She was my classmate in college.”
Murthy’s face lit up with joy. “Really? That’s wonderful! She got married two years ago and now lives in Perth.”
Vasanth was genuinely happy to hear about his brilliant classmate—someone he had always admired. He remembered how he had missed inviting her to his recent wedding and now, quite unexpectedly, had discovered her whereabouts.
After chatting a while longer, Vasanth took his leave, feeling deeply content. What began as a casual walk on the platform turned into a meaningful moment of kindness—and a beautiful reconnection with his past.
He skipped his usual park walk that day, knowing that this simple gesture of help had brought warmth, gratitude, and a touch of nostalgia to his heart.
