Small Story 416
Unexpected Surprise
Ramu came to his office and was surprised to see his classmate Nandhini waiting for him. He never expected her to visit—normally, she would message or call before coming. It had been more than two years since they had last spoken, after Ramu got married.
“Hey Ramu, how are you?” Nandhini greeted him with a warm smile.
“I wanted to surprise you, so I didn’t inform you earlier. I’m happy to tell you that I’ve resigned from my job in event management and will be leaving for the U.S. to study Media and Communication.”
Ramu was taken aback. “I never expected this decision from you! Back in college, you were very particular about staying in India.”
Nandhini nodded. “True, Ramu. But sometimes life takes turns we don’t plan. I also want to tell you something I’ve kept inside for a long time. I had a crush on you during college and wanted to tell you one day. But soon after, I fell ill and was diagnosed with an early-stage tumor. I was actually glad I didn’t tell you then because of my health condition. Later, when I heard you got married, I didn’t try to contact you. My focus was on recovery.”
Ramu listened silently, his eyes filled with empathy.
“After two years of treatment,” she continued, “I’m now completely cured. But last year, I lost my parents in an accident. That’s when I decided to start afresh. My cousin Vasanthi, who’s a CEO at a leading communication firm, suggested I pursue a one-year course abroad and then join her company. She’s already arranged my visa, ticket, and admission to a reputed college in the U.S.”
Ramu smiled softly. “Nice things are happening in your life, Nandhini. You’ve overcome your illness—that’s a huge relief—and now you’re moving ahead with courage. I’m extremely happy that my friend is going to have a bright future in the U.S.”
Nandhini nodded gratefully. “Yes, Ramu. We can only pray to God to fulfill our wishes, but we shouldn’t insist that everything must go exactly as we want.”
Ramu whispered, “Very true.”
They parted with smiles, hearts lightened by memories and hope for the future.
