Small Story 405
The Mall Encounter That Changed Reshma's Life"
Reshma was surprised to see Nandhini at Forum Mall. They had been good friends for the past six years, ever since Nandhini’s father was admitted to Private Hospital, where Reshma had been the kind nurse who took care of him.
"Hey! I missed you for such a long time," Nandhini exclaimed. "I was thinking of inviting you to my wedding two years back! But I went for my PG course in Nursing, and by the time I came back, we had lost touch."
"Wow, that’s great! Congratulations!" Reshma replied warmly.
Nandhini smiled and said, "Next week, there's a Diwali celebration in our apartment with lots of fun programs. You have to come! I’ll message you the details."
They exchanged numbers and parted ways with a renewed sense of connection.
Reshma was genuinely happy for Nandhini. But deep down, she also felt a little nostalgic. She remembered Ashok — her old friend, a talented singer who had performed in many local events and festivals. They had lost touch when she left for her studies, and she no longer had his number.
A few days later, Reshma received a call and message from Nandhini, inviting her to the Diwali function at Elegant Apartments.
When Reshma arrived, she was amazed by the festive atmosphere and the apartment's modern facilities. Nandhini and her parents warmly welcomed her with sweets and snacks. Then, Nandhini took her to the party hall, which was decorated in a glamorous Bollywood theme.
The event began with energetic dances and entertaining skits. Then came the much-awaited singing performance. As the singer began to sing an old classic from the film Sangam, Reshma froze. The voice — it was Ashok’s! She knew it instantly.
On stage, the singer’s face was partially covered, but there was no mistaking that voice.
After the program, Nandhini led Reshma backstage. It really was Ashok. He looked surprised but deeply moved to see her.
In a low voice, he said, "I met with a fire accident. My face was severely burned… I thought you'd never want to see me like this. So, I stopped trying to reach you."
Reshma gently held his hand and said, "Ashok, I fell for your voice and your heart — not just your face. I still love you."
Nandhini, who witnessed their emotional reunion, smiled knowingly. “Come, Reshma. Let me introduce you to my husband, Mohan. He’s a plastic surgeon.”
The next day, Ashok met Mohan for a consultation. After examining him, Mohan assured him that he could restore his face.
Two weeks later, Ashok looked into the mirror and saw his old self again — thanks to Mohan’s skilled hands.
Reshma was overwhelmed with gratitude. She thanked Nandhini tearfully, realizing how much her friend had done — not just by reconnecting them, but by changing their lives forever.
When Reshma thanked Mohan, he smiled humbly and whispered, “Your care once saved my father-in-law’s life. Now, God gave me a chance to give something back.”
Tears welled up in both Reshma and Ashok’s eyes. Life had come full circle — in the most beautiful way.
