Small Story 584.
Memorable Madurai
Swarna was walking inside her house compound when she suddenly received a call from her cousin Shubha in Mumbai.
“Hey, how are you? Next week I am coming to your place with my grandchildren for a vacation,” said Shubha.
Swarna was delighted to hear this. Shubha, who was now settled in Mumbai with her husband Harish, had an only daughter living in New Zealand. Her grandchildren, Nandhini and Narain, had come to India on vacation and wanted to visit Madurai to see the temples and the famous Chitra Festival.
Harish could not join them because of his building’s annual function.
A few days later, Shubha arrived in Madurai with the children. They were thrilled to see Swarna’s independent house in Chockikulam, built ten years ago. Swarna’s husband, a retired professor from the American College, welcomed them warmly.
The cousins were overjoyed to meet after a long time. They spent hours reminiscing about their childhood holidays in Madurai—the hot summers, frequent power cuts, and how they managed through those days.
“Madurai has changed so much,” said Shubha.
“Yes, but it still holds on to its traditions and culture,” replied Swarna.
They spent a wonderful week visiting temples, attending the famous Chitra Festival, and enjoying delicious food and sweets.
When it was time to leave, the children whispered to Shubha,
“Aunty, every vacation we want to come here to enjoy the beautiful temples, traditions, and the respect people show to everyone.”
Shubha smiled and softly said,
“I have seen the old Madurai, and today I see its rapid growth—just like our Bharat.”
With happy memories in their hearts, Shubha and the children departed, promising to return again.
