Small Story 580..
Book Encounter
Poornima walked into her classroom. She was an English teacher for Grade IX and was well known for her excellent teaching. Her students consistently scored the highest marks in English.
In her mid-forties, Poornima had developed a deep passion for teaching. She completed her MA in English Literature and dedicated her life entirely to education. She lived peacefully with her aged mother in a modest apartment in Bhanashankari, close to her school. She had lost her father during the COVID period, and now her mother received his pension. Together, they led a simple and content life.
Many times, her mother had asked her about marriage, but Poornima always refused. Being an only daughter, she had decided to stay with and care for her mother.
One day, her friend Smitha called.
“Hey, how are you, Poornima?”
“I’m fine. How are you?” Poornima replied.
“I’m good. Yesterday, my husband’s old boss came to our home. After tea, Mr. Gupta told me, ‘Your husband is a wonderful human being. Thank you for the treat.’ As he was leaving, he gave me a book. After he left, my husband told me that at the age of 75, his boss had fulfilled his ambition of publishing his own book. I was really surprised!”
“This morning, I started reading it. The stories are not only amazing but also simple to understand. That’s why I’m calling you. As a good friend and a teacher, I want you to read it too. I’ll send the book through our friend Kanaka—she’s visiting you this afternoon and stays in your apartment.”
“Sure, I’ll read it and return it,” said Poornima.
The next afternoon, after finishing the book, Poornima called Smitha.
“The stories are truly wonderful—simple, meaningful, and inspiring. I even told my students to get the book on Kindle. It’s written in simple English and carries strong moral messages. Please thank the author, Mr. Gupta, your husband’s former boss at MICO.”
Smiling, Poornima placed the book gently on her table, feeling inspired by the thought that age is never a barrier to achieving one’s dreams.
