 Small Story 592

Happy Overseas Calls

Ram, after his morning walk, entered his friends’ usual meeting spot. Laxman and Basavanna greeted him warmly.

“Hey Ram, Harish is on the line from the US,” Laxman said, handing over the phone.

“Hello, Harish! How is life in the US? And how is your daughter?” Ram asked.

“Everything is fine, Ram,” Harish replied cheerfully. “I’m enjoying my time here, reconnecting with old friends.”

After a brief chat, Ram passed the phone to others so they could greet Harish. Soon, the group settled down with tea and biscuits, enjoying their usual camaraderie.

A little later, Basavanna received a call from Lawyer Ramesh, who was in Germany. He greeted him warmly, and Ram too wished Ramesh, whispering, “Enjoy your stay.”

Satya smiled and said, “Today we received two overseas calls. It’s wonderful to know they are happy and doing well.”

Laxman nodded and asked Ram, “When are you planning to visit your daughter?”

“Not this year,” Ram replied thoughtfully. “Let the present crisis settle down. Normalcy must return in West Asia, and travelers should feel comfortable flying with their favorite airlines.”

The group had been meeting at the same junction, near a well-known restaurant, for over two and a half decades. Their regular gatherings—even on holidays—kept their bond strong. Ram always admired this closeness and often spoke about it.

“After retirement,” Ram would say, “senior citizens need companionship, mutual respect, and emotional support.” He found all of that in this group.

After chatting happily and connecting with friends across the globe, Ram took leave and headed home with a contented heart.
