 Small Story 607

A Happy Indian Encounter

Merlyn never anticipated such an affectionate reception from her husband Vinay’s parents. Vinay worked in the same company as her in Chicago, and over time they fell in love. Initially, Vinay was hesitant because they belonged to different faiths, and he deeply respected his parents’ wishes. However, after observing Merlyn’s kind nature and behavior for more than a year, he changed his mindset and sought his parents’ permission to go ahead with the marriage.

Vinay and Merlyn had a registered marriage in Chicago and later came to Chennai, where Vinay’s father Shyam and mother Sushma lived. Shyam worked as an engineer in a leading company, while Sushma was a psychiatrist. Vinay was their only son, and they always supported his decisions without unnecessary interference.

Before the marriage, Vinay had spoken to Sushma about Merlyn and her affection for him. He carefully understood Merlyn’s character before sending her photograph to his parents. Even though Merlyn was an American girl, Sushma was impressed by her picture and the sincerity in Vinay’s words. She believed that love built on understanding, trust, and good values would always succeed. Vinay’s honest and caring nature strengthened her confidence.

Shyam lived in an independent house in Anna Nagar, surrounded by malls and shopping complexes. Since it was Merlyn’s first visit to India, she was deeply impressed by the warmth and friendliness of the people around her.

Merlyn had lost her parents at a young age, and her elder brother had raised her with love and care. He too liked Vinay very much.

One morning, Merlyn asked Sushma softly, “Mum, can I cook today?”

Sushma was surprised and Merlyn replied, “I can cook your food for you. Vinay has already taught me a few dishes.”

Merlyn smiled warmly. “Ever since we got married, I have been cooking Indian food at home, and I also eat your traditional food every day.”

Shyam and Sushma were pleasantly surprised and applauded her willingness to adapt to their food habits and culture.

Vinay smiled and said, “Mum, I have always enjoyed your cooking and wanted the same food habits to continue in our life. Merlyn wanted to learn our cooking methods, and I taught her. She has happily adapted to our lifestyle.”

Sushma whispered to Shyam, “I am confident they will have a wonderful married life. They share the same food habits, mutual respect, and strong faith in each other. Such relationships rarely go wrong.”

Shyam nodded and replied, “I completely agree with you. After all, you are an expert psychiatrist and understand people very well.”

After spending three joyful weeks in Chennai, Vinay and Merlyn returned to the United States with hearts full of happiness. Merlyn felt as though she had found her parents once again. Before leaving, she warmly invited Shyam and Sushma to come and stay with them permanently in the US.
