Small Story 598.
The Marathon Misunderstanding
Arun stood alone on the ground, feeling upset. The 8 km marathon was about to begin, yet none of his friends had arrived. His close friends—Basavaraj, Vijay, and Nagaraj—were always punctual participants. Their absence, and the lack of any communication, made Arun uneasy.
Just then, Rekha appeared and greeted him, “Hey Arun, you’ve forgotten to go to the award ceremony in the auditorium. Your friends are getting prizes there!”
Suddenly, Arun remembered the function mentioned in the invitation. He rushed to the auditorium, where a huge crowd had gathered. The speaker invited everyone to honor the previous marathon winners. One by one, the awards were distributed.
The announcer then made an important statement: “This time, the marathon will start at 8 a.m. in September to avoid the hot sun.”
Arun realized he had completely forgotten this detail from the invitation. After congratulating his three friends and the other winners, they all headed toward the venue together.
On the way, Basavaraj smiled and said, “Hey buddy, you forgot that you came first last time!”
Arun nodded and replied, “True, buddy. I was so excited about participating this year that I was only focused on the race. I was aiming for recognition again.”
After the one-and-a-half-hour program, they began heading home. Before leaving, Basavaraj whispered, “I appreciate your spirit. Your focus on the marathon brought you straight to the ground first—and then to the ceremony.”
The other friends nodded in agreement, smiling at Arun’s dedication.
