Small Story 470.
Small Story 470
Balance of Honesty
Every day after finishing his morning walk, Shashi would stop at a small petty shop to buy a special toffee. He lovingly gave it to his three-year-old granddaughter, Ashwini, a smart and cheerful little girl. Though the toffee was meant for her, she always shared it with her elder brother. The Parle toffee could be broken into small pieces, and both grandchildren enjoyed it happily, feeling their grandfather’s affection.
Shashi was a retired army major who had earned many accolades during his service. That day, as usual, he gave the toffee to Ashwini when suddenly his phone rang. It was an unknown number.
“Sir, this is Vittal, the petty shop owner,” the caller said politely. “Today when you bought the toffee, you gave me 500 rupees and forgot to take the balance. I didn’t have your number, but a kind person helped me get it. You can come now or tomorrow to collect your balance of 470 rupees.”
Shashi felt truly happy listening to Vittal’s honest words.
Soon after, another call came from Basavaraj, Shashi’s good friend. “Hey Shashi,” he laughed, “today I happened to visit your shop. Vittal told me about the forgotten balance, so I gave him your number. I also bought the same toffee—you really have great taste!”
Shashi smiled. His wife Rashmi looked at him and nodded with a meaningful smile, proud of the honesty and goodness that surrounded their lives.
