Small Story 475
Voluntary Sponsorship for Andal’s Tiruppavai
After completing her temple visit, Vedhavalli stepped outside. Her friend Shubha was waiting for her.
“Hey Vedha, finished your routine prayers?” Shubha asked.
“Yes,” Vedhavalli replied. “Why haven’t you gone home yet?”
“A friend of mine wanted to meet you. She asked me to come here at 7 p.m. It’s almost time—she’ll be here soon,” Shubha said.
Just then, Sowmya arrived in her car. She greeted Shubha and respectfully wished Vedhavalli.
“I am Sowmya,” she said. “I have been listening to your Tiruppavai discourse regularly for the past three years. I truly like the way you explain everything so simply and clearly.”
Vedhavalli smiled quietly.
Sowmya continued, “This year, I would like to voluntarily sponsor the prasadam for the last day of your Tiruppavai discourse. If you agree, I wish to host it at my home. Otherwise, it can continue at your home as usual for 100 people, with the caterer of your choice. This kaingaryam is very important to me. I believe this is your 12th year of discourse.”
Vedhavalli stood astonished and speechless. She never imagined that her simple lectures—without advertisements or television exposure—had reached people so deeply. Only a small group attended each year, listening with devotion.
“I am not very popular,” Vedhavalli said humbly. “I only speak according to our Acharyas’ guidance, with authenticity.”
Sowmya softly replied, “That is exactly why I admire your discourse. Please promise to accept my sponsorship this year, on the auspicious Bhogi day, with your favorite caterer.”
Overwhelmed, Vedhavalli returned inside the temple. With tears of joy, she prayed, “What is this divine mercy?” After a few moments, she came back and accepted Sowmya’s request.
After spending some time together, Vedhavalli dropped Sowmya at her home.
No one can deny the beauty of Andal’s Tiruppavai—the depth of its meanings, its divine attraction, and the devotion it awakens. Sowmya’s heartfelt decision to perform this kaingaryam during the sacred month of Margazhi stood as a blessing from the Goddess herself, reflecting the true impact of Vedhavalli’s sincere discourse.
