Small Story 469.

Small Story 469 Sweet Sixty A Meeting That Changed Everything Arun stood at a distance, watching the group with quiet curiosity. All of them were sixty years old. He hesitated—whom should he approach? His own retirement was still three months away. In his office, retirement came at fifty-eight. Would they even consider him? Just then, his mobile rang. It was his colleague, Shyamala. “Hello Arun, how are you? If you’re free tomorrow evening, you can come with me to the annual function of my dad’s group in our apartment.” Arun smiled. “Of course, I’ll come. I’d love to meet your dad.” The next evening, Arun met Madhav Rao, Shyamala’s father, and greeted him warmly. “How are you, Arun?” Madhav Rao said with a smile. “My daughter often speaks about your leadership in the office. I also hear you’ll be retiring in three months. She has learned many good qualities from you.” “Thank you, sir,” Arun replied modestly. “She invited me to attend your association meeting.” “You’re most welcome,” Madhav Rao said. “We’re completing ten years today. I started this group, and now we are sixty members from our apartment.” They walked together to the hall where the meeting was being held. After a few speakers, Arun was unexpectedly asked to say a few words. As Arun spoke, he observed the group’s remarkable work—voluntary service across communities, support for poor students’ education, and help with marriages for the underprivileged. He praised the group’s decade-long service to society and congratulated them sincerely. However, he added honestly that he could not participate as a member for two reasons: he was neither a resident of the apartment nor sixty years old yet. The audience applauded warmly. After a pleasant dinner, Arun thanked Shyamala for inviting him and left. The next morning, Arun received an email from Madhav Rao, the group’s secretary. All the members had unanimously agreed to include Arun as a member, despite the age and residency rules. They were deeply moved by his sincere and touching speech. The very next day, Arun proudly entered the apartment and signed the register as a member of the Sweet Sixty Group. He thanked Shyamala warmly. Her invitation—and his heartfelt words—had turned into a wonderful beginning with a remarkable group in a prestigious area.
