Small Story 418
Loneliness in Old Age — A Tough Task
Shyam came to his favourite library and saw his old friend Ratnakar sitting and reading. Surprised and happy, he went near and said,
“Hey buddy! Where have you been? It’s been more than five years since I last saw you.”
Ratnakar looked up, pleasantly surprised. This library had always been their favourite spot back in the day. Both friends had worked together in GKW, a well-known company in Bengaluru. After retirement, they had settled in different places and lost touch.
Ratnakar smiled. “Why don’t we go out, have some tea, and talk about the old days?”
“Great idea,” said Shyam, and they both walked to a nearby restaurant.
Over tea, Shyam began, “I remember you went with your son and wife to Muscat after retirement.”
Ratnakar nodded. “Yes, we had a good time with our son and his family. But… my wife Shilpa passed away three years ago due to a massive heart attack. The past two years, I felt like a fish out of water. Shilpa and I shared thirty-five beautiful years together, and her absence still hurts deeply.”
He paused, his eyes moist. “Though my son and daughter-in-law took good care of me, I couldn’t forget Shilpa. So, I decided to return here last month and settle in a private senior home with all facilities. My family wasn’t happy with the decision, but I felt it was the right thing for me. The emptiness without Shilpa is something I must live with.”
Shyam gently said, “You’ve made a brave decision, my friend. Whatever happens in life, we must accept it as part of the journey. I’m glad we met again — your new home is very close to my house. Let’s meet every day.”
After spending half an hour together, both friends departed.
When Shyam reached home, he whispered to himself,
“Losing one’s wife in old age and living alone — it truly is a tough task.”
