Small Story 423.
Small Story 423.
The Selection Encounter
For the third time, Nagendra tried calling that number — and as usual, the line was busy.
Nagendra, a talented carrom player who had won many accolades, was eager to participate in the upcoming Singapore tournament. His friend had given him the number of a selection committee member, Harish, who was said to know him well and had promised to put in a good word.
For two days, Nagendra tried to reach Harish, but there was no response.
His father comforted him, saying, “Don’t worry, son. You’ve earned a good name here. Take it easy.”
That day at the office, Nagendra met his friend Chetana and shared his disappointment. She too advised him, “Take it easy, Nagendra. What’s meant for you will come.”
Another two days passed. Nagendra kept trying — still no reply.
When the tournament selections were announced in the newspaper, Nagendra didn’t even bother to look. But soon, his phone rang — it was Chetana, her voice full of excitement.
“Hey, congratulations! You’ve been selected to represent India in the Singapore tournament!”
Nagendra couldn’t believe his ears. He quickly checked the paper — and there it was, his name among the selected players.
That evening, when he returned home from work, his phone rang again. This time, it was a new voice.
“Sorry, Nagendra,” said the caller. “I couldn’t take your calls earlier. I was busy with other engagements. I had already selected you after learning about your performance and background — I just wanted to keep you in suspense. Congratulations!”
Later, a family friend called to say, “You know, Harish believes in quality players. He doesn’t entertain recommendations. He selected you a few days ago purely on merit.”
Nagendra was taken aback. In this competitive world, where people often rely on influence and connections, here was a man who valued integrity and talent.
He smiled and nodded, thinking, Just like the great stalwart of the judiciary — Harish Salve.
