Small Story 549
Disappointment Turned Into Fortune
Harish came to his cabin and sat in his chair. Attender Rangan entered with some files for his signature. After signing them, Harish returned the files.
Before leaving, Rangan hesitantly said,
“Sir, I heard there is a vacancy in the stores department. I would like my son to be considered for that job.”
Harish looked at him and asked, “What is your son’s qualification?”
Rangan humbly replied, “He is a Computer Engineer. He passed out last year.” He then handed over his son’s biodata.
Harish glanced at it and said, “I’m sorry, Rangan. This morning, on my way to the office, I already selected someone for that position.”
Rangan was disappointed. The job offered a good salary, and it would have helped his family during their financial difficulties.
The next morning, Rangan’s son Sathish received a call from an unknown lady.
“Are you Sathish?” she asked.
“Yes,” he replied.
“You need to come to our office today at 3 PM for a discussion. I will send you the location by message.”
Sathish was surprised. He wondered who the lady was and why she wanted to meet him. His father had already left for work.
In the afternoon, Sathish reached the location mentioned in the message. At the reception, he said that a lady had called him in the morning.
“You are Sathish? Please go to that cabin,” the receptionist said.
Sathish entered the cabin and saw an elegant lady sitting at the desk.
“I am Pavithra, the Project Manager of this UK-based firm. I called you today. I was impressed with your biodata,” she said.
Sathish was astonished and wondered how she had received his biodata.
“You will undergo three months of training here,” Pavithra continued. “After that, you will be posted to London. Here is your appointment letter.”
Sathish looked at the letter in disbelief. During training he would receive ₹75,000 per month, and after training he would receive a salary in London currency.
Overjoyed, Sathish bought his father’s favorite sweets and went home.
That evening, when Rangan returned from work, Sathish excitedly told him everything. Rangan was shocked.
“If you had joined my office, you would have earned only ₹25,000,” he said.
Just then Rangan’s phone rang. It was Harish.
“Rangan, I accidentally called you,” Harish said.
“No problem, sir. I wanted to tell you something. My son got a good job. His salary is ₹75,000—three times more than the job in your office.”
“That is wonderful news,” Harish replied.
Rangan hesitated and said, “Sir, I thought you refused to take him because I am retiring next month.”
Harish gently said, “Rangan, I am also retiring next month. I have watched you work with dedication and honesty for the past 27 years. After you left yesterday, I saw your son’s biodata and called Pavithra. She agreed to offer him a good position because of his qualifications.”
Rangan was stunned.
“Sir, I’m very sorry. I misunderstood you,” he said with tears in his eyes.
Harish softly replied, “Don’t apologize. Sathish deserves a bright future.”
After the call ended, Rangan wiped his tears. He realized how wrongly he had judged Harish.
The truth was known only to Harish:
Pavithra, the project manager who offered
