Small Story 542.
The Diamond Bangle Surprise
Pankajam, the wife of Koteswararao, heard the doorbell ringing and opened the door. A young man in his twenties was standing outside.
“Madam, Mr. Dhananjay Setty from the famous jewelry shop has sent this to you. It was ordered by Koteswara Sir one month back. Please call this number and inform our boss after you receive it and check the item.”
Pankajam was surprised. She opened the box and saw a beautiful diamond bangle inside. She immediately called the shop and informed them that she had received it.
Holding the bangle in her hands, she went to her deity, placed it before the idol, and prayed. She wondered how her husband had arranged such a surprise without giving her even a small hint.
Just then her daughter Asha called.
“Mom, how are you? Today is your star birthday. Congratulations!”
Only then did Pankajam realize that it was her star birthday — a day they usually celebrated but she had forgotten this year.
Later in the evening, after Asha ended the call, Koteswararao returned from the office. Only two weeks were left for his retirement.
Pankajam greeted him happily.
“Thank you for your gift — the magnificent diamond bangle!”
Koteswararao looked surprised.
“You already got it? I thought I would go with you this evening to collect it.”
At that moment, his phone rang.
“Hello Koteswar! This is Dhananjay. I’m going out of town this evening, so I safely delivered the bangle to your wife. I wanted to keep it a surprise!”
Pankajam smiled and nodded.
But she said softly, “At this stage, spending such a huge amount for this bangle will only increase your burden.”
Koteswararao smiled gently.
“You know me well, dear. In the office I may be Manager Koteswararao, but in life I am just a struggling human being with contentment.”
He continued,
“A friend of mine is a film producer. He likes the way I speak and my life experiences. He asked me to tell him a story. I told him about my earlier struggles and how I reached this level.”
“Six months ago he made a film based on my story with new actors. The film ran successfully for 50 days in two theatres. I received a good payment for the story and my name appeared on the screen.”
“He was very happy and wanted to gift me a gold chain. But I requested him instead to give a diamond bangle for you. I offered to pay the difference, but he refused and ordered it from Dhananjay Jewelry.”
He looked at her with affection.
“When we got married, you wore only ordinary bangles. From that day I decided that before my life ended, I would make you wear a diamond bangle.”
“After three decades by God’s grace, I could finally fulfill that promise.”
Pankajam’s eyes filled with tears.
She held his hands and said softly,
“Your name is Koteswararao… but your heart is that of a real Koteswaran (a truly wealthy man).”
Because the richest person is not the one with money,
but the one with love and gratitude in the heart.
