Small Story 553.
The Progress of Parameswariah
Parameswariah was a retired school headmaster who settled in his native village near Malavalli. The village had around 2,000 houses, a small school, and a post office. He loved the peaceful atmosphere of his village and decided to spend his retired life there with his wife, Annapoorna, a retired bank manager.
They had two sons who were settled in Boston, USA.
Annapoorna was a passionate writer who often wrote about women’s problems and their safety. Seeing her dedication to writing inspired Parameswariah to start writing stories as well. Within two years, his stories became quite popular. He enjoyed writing while living in the calm and beautiful environment of the village among simple and friendly people.
One thing always stayed in his mind. The village school had around 300 students but lacked proper facilities. Parameswariah dreamed of developing the school up to the 8th standard so that village children could receive better education.
As a teacher, he loved the letter “P.” He often told students that “P” stands for many meaningful words—Progress, Purpose, Perseverance, Prediction, and Possibility. These words inspired him throughout his life.
He decided that if any of his stories were ever made into a film and brought him money, he would use that amount to develop the school.
One day, his prediction came true. A famous film director who loved rural stories read one of Parameswariah’s stories and decided to make a movie based on it. The film became a great hit.
Parameswariah used the money he earned to expand the village school. Since it was a private school, he was able to invest directly in its development. Annapoorna felt proud and happy about her husband’s dream and his commitment to improving the village.
After seeing these developments, their two sons also donated one million rupees to support the school’s improvement.
The entire village was delighted. The school now had better facilities, and many more children could continue their education.
Parameswariah believed that anything is possible when a person works with dedication and genuine interest. With progressive thinking and continued effort, the school was gradually expanded up to the 12th standard.
His retirement mission was finally fulfilled.
Parameswariah, the man who believed in Progress, became a role model for the entire village.
