Small Story 529
One Comment Won’t Decide Our Worth
Vasanthy and Revathy were neighbours in a well-equipped apartment in the posh area of Anna Nagar, Chennai. They had been good friends for two decades. In fact, they had moved into the apartment on the same day and shared a strong bond of understanding and affection.
One day, Revathy came to Vasanthy’s apartment with an upset look on her face.
Vasanthy noticed immediately.
“Hey, what happened? You’re not in your usual mood,” she asked gently.
Revathy sighed. “Yesterday, one of my relatives met me at a mall. She has come from the US for the holidays. She told me that her son got a good job at Google and then asked what Vinod is doing. I told her he is working as a manager in a private company. Then she said sarcastically, ‘If he had studied IT, my son could have pulled him into Google. He is only an ordinary graduate.’ That comment really upset me.”
Vinod was earning ₹2,50,000 per month in India, which was a very good salary, and he was happy with his job. Still, the remark about being ‘just an ordinary graduate’ hurt Revathy deeply.
Vasanthy smiled calmly and said, “Is that why you’re upset? In this world, people make blunt comments without thinking. They don’t realize that situations change. I never bother about what others say — whether they call me good or bad. No one can decide a person’s growth or character just by commenting. Just because someone says something, we are not going to change. I am always Vasanthy, and you are Revathy. That’s all. We must learn to take such comments lightly. One person’s opinion cannot define us.”
Revathy felt her mind clear. “You’re right, Vasanthy. We should take it easy and ignore such remarks.”
After sharing some snacks and laughter, Revathy returned to her apartment with a smiling face.
