Small Story 534.
Small Story 534
The Magic Name of Ram
Ram never expected a call from Sumanth, the son of his close friend Laxman. Sumanth said he wanted to meet him and would be coming to his apartment after work.
Exactly on time, Sumanth arrived carrying a large box of sweets. Ram’s wife, Smitha, was surprised to see the box full of sweets.
“Uncle, Aunty, I have good news,” Sumanth began excitedly. “Yesterday, I attended an interview at a multinational pharmaceutical company for the position of Research Assistant in the Quality Control Department. During the interview, the Chief Selection Doctor asked me if I had any reference in the pharma industry. Immediately, I remembered you, Uncle. My father has often spoken about your top position in the company from which you retired.”
Sumanth continued, “When I mentioned your name and your company, the Chief was very impressed. To my surprise, he told me on the spot that I was selected!”
Ram was happy, though he could not immediately recognize the name of the Chief Selection Doctor. After giving Sumanth his blessings, he saw him off.
A little later, Ram received a phone call.
“Hello, sir. This is Raja, your train friend. We traveled together last March from Hyderabad to Bengaluru.”
Ram quickly remembered the pleasant journey and their conversation about the pharmaceutical industry.
Raja continued, “Yesterday, I interviewed Sumanth. His credentials were impressive, but we require a strong reference. When he mentioned your name and your company, I was truly impressed. He spoke very highly of you.”
Ram smiled warmly. “Thank you so much, Mr. Raja. I am glad to hear from you. I remember our journey from Hyderabad to Bengaluru. I am happy that I still have a good name in the industry.”
Raja replied respectfully, “Sir, you are a legend in the pharma industry.”
Smitha, who had been listening to the conversation, smiled proudly. “No doubt about that,” she said.
Ram realized that a good name earned through years of honesty and dedication is truly magical — it continues to bless others even after retirement.
