 Small Story 766

A Heartwarming Change of Heart

Valli travelled by bus from Aruppukottai to Madurai to attend the wedding of her aunt Sivagami’s elder son, Suresh. When she arrived at the Madurai bus stand, her cousin Raja was waiting to receive her. Suresh’s wedding was scheduled to take place two days later.

Valli had completed her journalism course and was eager to begin her career as a journalist with a newspaper company. However, despite her qualifications and enthusiasm, she had been unable to secure a suitable job because she lacked the recommendations needed to enter the field.

Raja, aged 24, was a smart and handsome young man who had completed his mechanical engineering degree. His father, Ramanathan, was a bank manager working for a leading nationalised bank in Madurai. Raja and Suresh were the only two sons of Ramanathan and Sivagami.

Since their younger days, Raja had developed a special affection for Valli. He admired her charming personality, lively nature, and cheerful disposition. As they grew older, his childhood fondness gradually developed into deep affection. Valli, too, liked Raja, but she had never openly expressed her feelings.

There was, however, one major obstacle. Ramanathan was firmly against arranging marriages between close relatives. He had heard many people say that such marriages might not always lead to a happy married life. Consequently, he had decided that he would not encourage such an alliance for either of his sons.

After reaching their spacious, independent house in S.S. Colony, Valli was warmly welcomed by her aunt Sivagami.

“Valli, I am so happy that you have come at least two days before the wedding. We will have plenty of time to talk and make preparations. Your uncle and aunt will arrive on the wedding day,” Sivagami said affectionately.

Valli’s father worked as a clerk in a private company in Aruppukottai. Through his hard work and careful savings, he had managed to build a small house of his own. He led a modest but contented life with his wife, Abhirami, and their only daughter, Valli. Though the family was not wealthy, they valued affection, honesty, and mutual respect.

Suresh’s wedding was to take place in a grand marriage hall capable of accommodating nearly 2,500 guests. The family was busy making arrangements for the important occasion.

That afternoon, after lunch, Valli went to the upstairs room to rest. A little later, Raja came to see her.

“Valli, how are you? I hope you had a comfortable journey,” he said with a smile.

“I am fine, Raja. Thank you for coming to the bus stand to receive me,” she replied.

After a few moments of silence, Raja gathered the courage to speak about something that had been weighing on his mind.

“Valli, I may be going to Singapore for a job in about six months. I have already told Mummy that I want to marry you. She has promised to speak to Daddy and try to convince him. I know he is against marriages within the family, but I hope he will understand our feelings.”

Valli was taken aback. Although she had feelings for Raja, she had never expected him to speak so openly about marriage.

After a brief pause, she replied softly, “Raja, I know your father's nature. He is a very good-hearted person, and I have great respect for him. He has helped many students continue their education and has always been considerate towards others. I do not want to go against his wishes or cause him any distress. We should respect the decisions of our elders.”

Raja was stunned by her response. He had expected her to express happiness and share his hopes. Instead, she had placed his father's wishes above her own feelings.

He could not find the right words to reply. Disappointed and thoughtful, he quietly left the room.

The next two days passed in a flurry of wedding preparations. Suresh’s wedding was celebrated grandly, with relatives, friends, and well-wishers gathering to bless the newly married couple.

After the wedding celebrations, Valli and her parents prepared to return to Aruppukottai. Just as they were about to leave, Ramanathan called them.

“Brother-in-law, please sit down for a few minutes. Sivagami, you too, come and sit beside me. I have something important to tell you,” he said.

Valli’s parents exchanged curious glances and sat down. Valli also remained nearby, wondering what her uncle was about to announce.

Ramanathan looked at his brother-in-law and said with a smile, “I have some very good news for you. I have decided that my son Raja will marry your daughter, Valli! We shall conduct their wedding in the same marriage hall a month from now. Raja will be leaving for Singapore for his new job, and Valli will accompany him after their marriage.”

For a moment, nobody could speak.

Valli’s parents were overwhelmed with surprise. Valli herself could hardly believe what she had just heard. The very man whom she had believed would never agree to their marriage had now taken the initiative to arrange it.

Tears of happiness welled up in her eyes. Raja, who had been standing nearby, looked at his father in disbelief and then turned towards Valli with an expression of immense joy.

But what had brought about this unexpected change in Ramanathan’s decision?

There was a beautiful secret behind it.

That afternoon, quite by chance, Ramanathan had come upstairs and overheard the conversation between Raja and Valli. He had heard Raja express his desire to marry Valli and had listened carefully to her reply.

What touched him most deeply was Valli’s response. Although she loved his son, she had refused to insist on the marriage because she did not want to hurt him or disregard his wishes. She had spoken of his goodness, his generosity towards students, and her respect for him as an elder.

Ramanathan had never expected such maturity and consideration from a young woman who was herself emotionally involved in the matter.

He realised that Valli was not merely a charming and educated girl; she was a person of exceptional character who placed respect for elders above her personal desires. Her words revealed a depth of affection, humility, and understanding that he had rarely encountered.

His long-held reservations about marriages within the family began to give way. He understood that a successful marriage depended not merely on whether the couple were relatives, but also on their mutual understanding, values, affection, and respect.

That moment changed his heart completely.

He decided that Valli was the ideal daughter-in-law for his family. He was convinced that a girl who respected elders so sincerely would bring love, harmony, and happiness into their home.

As Valli stood before him with tears of joy, Ramanathan felt deeply satisfied with his decision. He had not only fulfilled his son's heartfelt wish but had also discovered the true worth of his future daughter-in-law.

Raja looked at Valli, and their eyes met. Without exchanging a word, they understood that their long-held feelings had finally received the blessing they had hoped for.

Valli wiped away her tears, folded her hands respectfully before her uncle, and thanked him.

Ramanathan smiled warmly and blessed her.

Sometimes, a single conversation can change a person's heart. True character reveals itself not through grand words or gestures, but through sincerity, humility, and respect for others.
