Letter Published in The National UAE on 24Feb 20 UAE’s initiative to help people who crate hope is a great move
With reference to the editorial Arab Hope makers Dubai backs the right causes (February 22): this was a meaningful and thought-provoking piece. The win by the Emirati gentleman, Mr Al Falasi who was awarded Dh 1million was heartening to read. That his hospital in Mombasa will undergo a transformation with the money awarded to him by the leadership of Dubai is very impressive. As is the fact that past winners have used their award money for noble causes. It is good for society that such philanthropic ideals are mooted by the country. The UAE has demonstrated its helping nature for the downtrodden on a global level.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 23Feb 20 May peace finally prevail in Afghanistan
With reference to Stefanie Glinski's report US-Taliban truce begins, paving the way for peace in Afghanistanthis was a good read. America's longest war in history could finally be coming to a close and the presence of US forces after almost two decades in Afghanistan might finally end. The Taliban caused terror across the country for too long. Let's hope now that the Afghan people now have a real shot at peace.

Letter Published in BM on 22Feb 20 Easing their burden was long overdue K Ragavan writes, Your cover story was an interesting read. The exit plans of old broom by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike and the new entry of vacuum cleaner machines to clean the city is a good move with a sizable cost for the civic body BBMP and .It may be easy for the pourakarmikas to clean. Many plans was planned and implemented by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagr Palike for the cleaning of garbage earlier but could not yield results. How ever this concept sounds good should serve the purpose with a huge cost. Hope this should be the last attempt from BBMP to clean the city. The cost should not go further and this should be the last gamble of cleaning the city. Will the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike deliver on this issue?

Letter Published in The National UAE on 20Feb 20  Sudan's troubles are far from over
With reference to the report Sudan could send ousted president Omar Al Bashir to The Hague (February 18): even though justice is being served by trying Bashir possibly at The Hague for the atrocities he has committed and for the long list of war crimes, Sudan's problems have not been fully solved. They need a good, committed administration for the development of the country and people. Only then will the country change.

Saying goodbye

A couple of days ago, I got a message that a loving friend had died. I couldn’t believe it. I had seen him recovering from bad health, but despite the recovery, he was still taken away. In my few years of association, I have seen this banker, and hockey player’s activities. I used to live with him for three and half years, and even after moving away, we still met almost daily.
He retired from working at the Reserve Bank of India. Apart from his profession, he had an interest in hockey and that was remarkable. I think he was even instrumental in getting a stadium built in Akkithimmanahalli in Bangalore. He has participated in many matches and won medals. Even as a banker he had good, friendly relations with his colleagues. He was the motivating factor to reestablish his gated community into a beautiful space. He was friendly, charming and always smiling. He is no more, but his legacy will continue and his motivation will be remembered by everyone. I cannot console his family but all I can do is pray for them.

The UAE is a champion of gender equality
With regards Patrick Ryan's article Global Women's Forum Dubai: Ivanka Trump says many Middle East women have 'half' the legal rights of men (February 16): Ivanka Trump's comments on gender equality were good. I especially liked what she said about how when women are free to succeed, families thrive, communities flourish and nations grow strong. And I agree with her that it is incredible that last year more than 70 per cent of university graduates in the UAE were women.
The UAE's push for gender equality in its policies is commendable. The rest of the world can learn something.

What about the senior citizens of India?

This is in reference to the recent Indian Budget delivered by the Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaram on February 1. On one hand, I applaud the Bengaluru suburban rail project, which Sitaram mentioned in the budget. However, on the other hand, this year’s budget and taxes also neglected senior citizens and non-pensioners of the country who are getting meagre bank deposit interest to meet their needs. I think this is sad. The bank deposit interest rate is not correlated to the normal expenditure of interest rate. The government should reconsider this in light with the current inflation. Will the ministry rethink this important issue?

Letter Published in BM on 8Feb 20Buying a home is tough and tricky too

K Ragavan writes the story ‘Bank’s distress sale has put home buyers in stress’ was sad to read. Syndicate bank’s auctioning of apartments has shattered the dreams of six persons. How such a reputed bank such as the Syndicate Bank could have failed to look into the apartments’ litigation issues, raises questions. I request the authorities to probe this incident and ensure that the buyers are given their flats or that their money is refunded. Today buying a property is not only tough but also tricky as no one knows if it is genuine. Government must intervene to protect people’s hard-earned mone
