Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 1Oct 15   ,Daesh is critical threat
It is thought provoking that despite Russia’s long association with Damascus, Syria, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to fight against Daesh is a welcome one. Daesh is predominantly in Syria and Putin’s decision is laudable.
The West has to join arms with Russia to eradicate the advancing Daesh terrorist group. When the West joins, this global menace maybe reduced. Will the West join Putin? Assad is not the critical threat to the international community.

Facebook debate: Reverse gender discrimination

If pay is fixed for any job position, should the job responsibilities also be implemented uniformly, regardless of gender?Uniform job responsibilities
When pay is fixed for job positions and responsibilities, gender should not come into the picture. Pay should be uniform for both genders. Both genders should be treated equally. Delivery is important, irrespective of gender. In my opinion, today both men and women are dominating equally in all fields and there should be no difference in pay.

Young talent

A few days ago, my grandson called and suggested that I watch a particular television channel at a specific time.

When I asked the reason, he kept it as a suspense.

When I put on the TV at that time, I was thrilled to see my grandson taking part in a music programme  along with more than 50 people of various age groups.

Nothing beats the joy of an elderly man than to see his grandchildren doing exemplary things. I decided to give a gift to appreciate him since he is only a Grade Two student.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 21Sep 15,Health care suffers in Delhi
It’s both sad and shameful that people continue to succumb to dengue in the Indian capital (Delhi hospitals struggle against dengue deaths, September 17). The response of hospitals to such emergencies is often lackadaisical, which proves that health care in Delhi is in a poor state.
The Delhi government made so many promises to the people in the past, one of which was that it would improve health care. As usual, those promises proved to be hollow.

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE On 20 Sep 15,Facebook debate: Should we sleep in before work
Readers debate after a study in the UK concluded that in adults should start work after 10am to increase productivity  Enough sleep in important

To a certain extent I agree with the study that says we shouldn’t start working until 10am. In many countries, the office starts after 10am anyway. In the Middle East and some South Asian countries, the work starts between 7.30 and 8am. All the schools start before 9am in most of the countries, too. Normal sleep requirements for an individual means around eight hours and at least six hours. Sleeplessness will certainly affect productivity and delivery. Some places, because of the climate, offices starts early. Overall, one should have good rest before starting work. Sleep deprivation could also be from spending more time out for pleasure and entertainment.

Genuine cause

In my group of friends, we recently decided to do something to help those needy out there. I was happy when my friends suggested we donate food, clothes, and other household necessities to a senior citizen’s home. It is really appalling to know that there are children who refuse to take care of their own parents.

I cannot believe that those children have forgotten their parents’ sacrifices and compromises as though it meant nothing but mere fulfilment of their duty. I am glad our Senior Citizens’ Club decided to help such brothers and sisters.

Letter Published in GulfNews UAE on 18 Sep 15Australia making a change
Australia’s Prime Minister Tony Abbott has been ousted by his party (‘Abbott ousted as Australia PM in a day of high political drama’, Gulf News, September 15). His recent dismissal by Malcolm Turnbull is quite a dramatic development in Australian politics. The policies of the former prime minister were the root cause of his exit. Will the former tech-entrepreneur, Turnbull, bring changes to the Australian people and change their history? We would have to wait and see. Political prowess is not a permanent status anywhere in the world.

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 17 Sep 15,Will the decision hold?
Gulf News recently reported about Lal Krishna Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Shatrughan Sinha being kept out of polls in Bihar, India (‘Advani, Joshi, Sinha not to campaign in Bihar’, Gulf News, September 12). The recent decision by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to drop their three senior leaders in the Bihar election by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is the latest development in Indian politics. Among the three, two of them are senior stalwarts and their advice is all that is required of them for these elections, and that might be the reason for dropping them. The other might be dropped for his recent remarks made in the media about his party and stance. The person is none other than the actor turned Bihar politician, Sinha. Despite his long-standing association with the BJP, he has been sidelined and it drove him to comment about the party’s leadership – this might be attributed to the reason for not being given a ticket to contest in the Bihar polls. Will this battle be fruitful for the BJP? We will have to wait and see.

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE  UAE on 13 Sep 15,Facebook debate: ‘Slacktivism’ a myth?
Are social media campaigns more than just ‘slacktivism’? Is raising awareness encourage the public to take action? Many more possibilities

I agree that slacktivism is a myth. Today, social media campaigns are paying more attention to people than ever before. Many campaigns are successful. Social media is more powerful than archaic ways of showing disapproval or frustration. People are uniting and joining together for causes. Today, this is possible because every one is connected through the internet.

Right click

I have a dear friend who is a multi-talented man. He is popular in the UAE for his writing, comments and photography. Many of his snaps have been published in the local publications. Although I am totally uninformed when it comes to photography, I admire both the field and his work immensely. The funny thing is when we met recently in India, he tried to explain to me the nuances of photography and I kept nodding my head.

After nearly one hour, he asked me, “Do you understand?”
He asked me to click a snap. I bungled, but he did not discourage.
“Keep trying, you will get it right.”
I loved the way he instilled a positive thought in me.

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 11Sep 15  Bittersweet reality in India
The Gulf News story about India announcing major pension overhauls for army veterans left me with mixed feelings (‘Government accepts OROP scheme’, Gulf News, September 6). On one hand, I am very happy about the announcement made by the Indian government about the one rank, one pension system for the retired army personnel. On the other hand, this may aggravate inflation because now thousands of Indians have a healthy purchasing capacity because of the recent hikes in their pensions. Those people retired from the private sector who are depending on the meagre bank interest on their deposits are finding it difficult to make ends meet due to mounting inflation. The government should either take control of inflation or increase the bank interest for retired senior citizens. Will the government take up this call for the retired senior citizens who are also human beings?

Are parents and teachers doing enough to teach children about respect for others and, in particular, for elders?Respecting elders very important

In today’s fast life, everyone is busy with their own agenda and they forget to teach respect for elders. This is the real truth. Both parents and teachers are forgetting this important aspect, apart from a few parents. I won’t blame the teachers for this. In their day-to-day busy schedule, they are not able to deliver this important thing. Respecting elders is very important. We all need our elders’ blessings.

Childhood memories

School memories are truly wonderful and timeless. I too have one such memory. One day I was called out of my classroom towards the end of school time.

A middle-aged gentleman informed me that my request to my father’s old friend regarding complimentary passes to a movie premiere was fulfilled.

I had not watched a movie for long. He handed the envelope to me. I was jumping with joy. The following day my happiness was limitless when I enjoyed watching the movie with my three friends.

Patels reflect Indian soecity The opinion article Caste system no longer reflects the realities of Indian economics (August 31) was interesting and timely. Agitation over such an issue underlines how backward Indian society is

For the Narendra Modi-led BJP government, this issue has created a major headache, as it cannot afford to alienate a powerful community. Yet it’s hard to support them, because that would anger other backward communities.
In such a situation, the better option for the government would be to wait for the movement to lose steam with time.
