Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 30 Mar16,Languages are an advantage
Communicating in another person’s language not only helps him/her, but also you will get respect by learning someone else’s mother tongue. Languages are an asset today. Many corporate sectors prefer a person who knows many languages for their operations. Knowing more languages will help for travelling abroad. In today’s fast-paced world, knowing more than your mother tongue is a welcoming one.

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 29 Mar 16 ,Terrorism and its implications
Today the entire globe is facing terror threats from different terror groups for their selfish motto (‘Brussels bomb prime suspects identified’, Gulf News, March 24). Due to the material damages and causalities and, above all, how this affects our children, our future is affected. If you analyse the root cause of terrorism, it’s mainly due to poverty, a vast difference in financial status, lack of education, improper guidance from elders and some have been brainwashed by violent groups. Today it has become a motto for many young people joining terror groups and destroying people and public places like airports, offices, malls and themselves.
Not only an individual’s progress, but also a country’s growth is seized. I wonder what pleasure these groups enjoy in their destruction? Peace, harmony and love are not in the mindset of terrorists. Recently, the Brussels airport attack is another example of their vengeful attitude against the recent arrest of the Paris attacks’ main man in Belgium. This attack was planned and executed.
Will the international community take up this call without further delay?

Banks are not disabled-friendly

Many physically challenged people are finding it difficult to enter banks because many banks do not provide access ramps. Banks need to make some arrangements for physically challenged people. One of my friends finds it difficult to go to bank and carry out work. I request the authorities concerned to look in to this issue and do the needful as early as possible.

I reside in Gubbalala Main Road,Palm Grove Enclave area. Close to this area, many big apartments have come up and we don't have frequent bus facilities to go either to Jayanagar 4Th Block or Banashankari from Uttarahalli via Gubbala Road then the main road in Kanakapura. Since lot of senior citizens are put in to inconvenience, the authorities concerned should either increase the frequency of buses or ply more buses.

Pigeon feeding

Whenever I open my window in the morning, two pigeons rush in searching for grains. My grandson sometimes spreads grains for the birds.

A friend who visited me recently shocked me by saying feeding pigeons at home is not advisable.

He quoted some articles in newspapers mentioning that such contact with pigeons at homes could cause some viral infection.

I am not sure whether the report is true, but I should confess that my pigeon feeding exercise has come down, though I am not happy about it.

Since the man’s daughter married a boy from a lower caste, the girl’s father got angry and killed the bridegroom along with his close relatives in Tamil Nadu, India (‘Police arrest father-in-law over ‘honour killing’, Gulf News, March 16). Despite many people watching this, no one came forward to save the boy. That it what was the sad part.

After the arrest of the Paris attacks’ main suspect, this airport attack in Brussels should be condemned. Frequent attacks make people anxious to travel. It is time for the international community to join together and eradicate this menace and save people. Today, more attacks are visible in the global scenario... I pray for the victims and their grieving family members.
It’s unfortunate and tragic. This attack might be due to the arrest of the Paris attacker. The real reason should be probed and the truth should come out, whether it was an isolated attack or something else entirely. Such attacks cannot be tolerated.

Rain fun

When a friend rang up from the UAE to say about the recent heavy rain there, I was thrilled. I recollected the days when I worked in Sharjah and always prayed for rain. It is always fun to watch children playing in the rain. Back home in India, I am used to hot weather in my city most of the time, and so anyone talking about rain automatically brings a smile in my face and I start singing, “Rain, rain, don’t go away.”

Pay your employees first to maintain a reputation
This was an interesting read considering the recent topic in the Indian media and print media about the departure of the business tycoon Vijay Mallya (‘Debt-laden Indian tycoon denies he absconded’, Gulf News, March 12). His recent comments on his reputation and blaming the media for only wanting higher ratings is the latest dramatic development in India. As a common man, I am wondering how he acquired so much money from the banks, including major nationalised banks. Without support from top people, he could not have acquired this much in loans. At a certain price point, banks won’t give loan for a common man without asking for guarantors.
He was popularly known as the ‘Liquor Tycoon’ and Kingfisher Airlines chief. Maybe that added advantage is why he got loans. Unfortunately, his strategy and over expansion landed him into this position. Now he has gone with the wind. When he talked about his reputation, why has he not paid salaries to his employees? The government of India should bring him back and the dues to his employees should be paid without further delay. If he would have been an honest international businessman, he could have settled the dues to all and not flown like this. Putting the inconvenience onto employees is not palatable.

Letter Published in India Abroad USA on Mar 18  A development budget   Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s federal Budget for 2016-17 was nicely elaborated. There are major plus points in his Budget, like the focus on rural infrastructure, SC/ST development allocation, more taxes on luxury cars and tobacco products, and tax clarifications for start-ups. The drawbacks include ignoring how to check inflation, a focus on senior citizens deposit interest rate and immediate attention to employment for youth. Write a comment...
Freedom of speech must be limited
Students can get involved in a country’s governance as long as it follows the framework and laws of the country By K. Ragavan In today’s society, most nations are striving to be as democratic as possible by allowing its people to express their opinions without feeling any fear. This is indeed, a healthy trend that should be applauded. However, it is important to note that you should not just express your own opinion, but also listen to that of the other person. Freedom of expression should be within the framework of that land and should not threaten your countrymen or create a divide within your community.
With regards to whether students should have a say in a country’s governance, holding a speech is acceptable as long as it remains respectful. Protests should not become violent, resulting in clashes that affect the wellbeing of others. We must draw the line where national security and interest is at stake as that is something that should always come as first priority.
Overall, the right to freedom of speech is a good way of letting citizens express their feelings. Everything has got a line of control and one should not cross that limit. Looking at the protests that took place at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi, India, it was considered acceptable for the students to participate and express their views, however, they should have known their limits. Getting caught up in the moment and not knowing how to deliver your message without hurting the sentiments of society are actions that are not acceptable in a civil society, and whoever engages in such should be held accountable.

Age no bar

The day-to-day life should go peacefully for senior citizens like me. I plan with my friends about every day’s itinerary.

A few days ago, we had planned to watch the good old movie,  Mackenna’s Gold, at a friend’s place.
The film was selected by our friends because they were ardent fans of Gregory Peck and Omar Sharif.

Watching the movie made us feel like victorious gold hunters. The get-together ended with a sumptuous lunch and made us realise that life is more than emails and phone calls.
There is nothing to beat a merry, friendly gathering, age no bar.

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 8March 16,Creating a foundation for #GenderParity at home
International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 and this year’s theme is #GenderParity since this past year saw a decline gender equality from previous years. Readers share how they think we need to be improving gender equality in social, economic, cultural and political termsFor better governance

The decline in gender equality last year was due to so many factors like market fluctuations and the economy. Now this is improving as many nations started recruiting women for top positions and they also proved their mettle. Earlier employers were hesitant to recruit women because of their maternity leave and other aspects, but I think their mindsets have changed.

India is encouraging equality and women empowerment in all areas like education, jobs and politics. The UAE is also adopting this concept.

Gender equality is needed at this hour, especially in politics. This concept will change society and women will get more recognition.

I was waiting for a taxi in front of my apartment. Suddenly, one person stopped his two-wheeler and asked me where I wanted to go.

I could not recognise the person because he was wearing a helmet. Noting my hesitation, he removed his helmet and I realised it was my friend. He was ready to drop me at my destination, but I realised that he did not have a spare helmet.

In our city, pillion riders too are supposed to wear helmets. He appreciated my spirit and said, “If only all motorists followed rules, the roads would be much safer.” Yes, road rules are meant to be followed, not broken.

This Gulf News editorial was meaningful to read, since after Railway Minister of India Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu’s recent budget announcement, he made significant plans for innovations and modernisation of the railways (‘India needs to shore up its railways infrastructure, Gulf News, February 27). Yet, infrastructure is needed for many states’ suburban areas so that people can reach the city.
