LetterPublished in GulfNews UAE on 28 Nov 17, Not  a great decision The recent decision from the Congress party to elevate Rahul Gandhi as the president in the coming month, was a dramatic development for Indian politics (“Congress declares road map for Rahul ’s elevation to president”, Gulf News, November 21). As a person, I like him, but I disagree with giving him more responsibilities to lead the party. Rahul has not made any achievement for the party and has not matured enough to address his opponents. The Congress has already lost its image with the people. Will this new move of elevating Gandhi as the party president regain the image of the party? That is the main question. From Mr K Ragavan India

In reference to your article Outrage in India over massive hospital bill (November 26), the bill that the patient was handed for a simple case of dengue fever was outrageous indeed. Their complaint to the Indian health ministry was fully justified. It is high time the government mitigate the cost factor at private hospitals as well. The health ministry should definitely investigate this very strange incident. I mean, who gets charged for thousands of pairs of gloves?

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 27Nov 17Violence is never the answer
The recent agitation on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film, Padmavati and the following threats being made to actress Deepika Padukone was sad (“Padmavati issue: Deepika Padukone’s parents get police protection”, Gulf News, November 22). On the one hand I applaud the concept of freedom of speech and expression, but on the other hand, violations of norms is unacceptable. Before making the script, the filmmakers should have gone deeper into the history of the ancient story. If he would have done the work and researched before making the film, this would not have happened. However the recent threat to Padukone is unacceptable. Threating someone is not the answer. The story should be analysed and action should be taken. I admire Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his work but if the movie affects the sentiments of the people, the censor board should decide the outcome of the movie, and not Karni Seva. Sensitive issues should be tackled diplomatically.

Your article Pakistan releases Mumbai attack 'mastermind' (November 24) was a shocking read. Hafiz Saeed was accused of being behind the deaths of many innocent people in the 2008 attack and still managed to walk away without being tried. The fact that he was never prosecuted despite all the allegations against him and pressure from the United States is deplorable. A sad state of affairs.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 23 Nov 17Young married couples need advice not divorce courts
Divorce rates are increasing, not only in the UAE, but all around the world (One in three Abu Dhabi couples divorce after year of marriage, November 21). The main reasons for this are ego, lack of understanding, not giving equal respect to each other and, above all, jealousy.
Even though many couples are very well educated, still divorce cases are increasing every year and this is upsetting. Some couples have got divorced because of the husband’s habits or abuse.
To over come all these complications, counselling may help. If a couple is guided properly on how to adjust to married life and they understand the concept of marriage, we may be able to reduce the percentages.

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 23Nov 17,Offering guidance
In my opinion, counselling is needed. Today, divorce has become very common, not only in the UAE but in India as well. The main reason for this is ego, a lack of understanding, not giving equal respect to each other and above all, professional jealousy. However, despite couples being educated, divorce cases are still increasing every year, which is sad. Some couples have opted for a divorce because of the husband’s habits and harassment. To overcome all these complications, counselling may help. It would guide people on how to properly adjust to married life and to understand the concept of marriage. Counselling may bring down today’s divorce percentage.

Your article The four factors that make a city a global magnet (November 21) was a good read. Tom Fletcher was right to point out that more and more people seem to be visiting universal cities like Paris and London year after year thanks to their dynamism. What made the writer conclude that Abu Dhabi is on par with these renowned hubs is the fact that tolerance, culture, inclusion and youth cultivation are integral to the capital's development agenda.

Letter published in The National UAE on 21 Nov 17, No end in sight to the plight of the Syrians  Your editorial 31,000 more reasons why Assad must go (November 19) was thought-provoking. Even after six years, the crisis in Syria has only worsened and seems to have no end in sight. In the end, only the civilians suffer. This is a sudden development from the UAE government, which most of the expatriates may not have expected (“Businesses told to pay excise tax before November 15”, Gulf News, November 13).  A good Initiative    World Diabetes Day is a day to raise global awareness for the disease. The preventive methods are highlighted by various media organisations, sports events and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO’s). The World Health Organisation with the International Diabetes Federation(IDF) initiated the Concept on November 14, to raise awareness for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Diabetes can be curable when controlled by medicines. Periodic tests taken once in three months can determine the stage of the disease and how to control it. Diet control, walking, and being active are the main tools to control diabetes. Most young children have less exercise and are obese, which are the main attributing factors. Your article Engaging young minds is key to our prosperity and security (November 9) was an interesting read. At the eighth World Science Forum, officials expressed the importance of cultivating youth interest in science for harnessing future resources. The UAE offers high incentive for science research and has several premium institutions to its name already. Most notably, its artificial intelligence strategy is so comprehensive that it even has its own minister. In my opinion, the region is on track to tackling pressing issues like water scarcity and food development by 2022, thanks to countries like the UAE and Jordan ensuring that the momentum on such issues is kept up.

India at risk of disease

India at risk of disease
Malnutrition and anaemia pose a huge health challenge to India, according to the Global Nutrition Report 2017 (“‘Malnutrition, anaemia pose huge health challenge to India’”, Gulf News, November 8). It revealed that India has more than 51 per cent of women who are suffering from anaemia, and this is an alarming signal. The main cause for anaemia is the deficiency of iron in the blood, which can be overcome with eating foods like green vegetables. Many women are not eating an iron-rich diet, which is one of the root causes for anaemia. The Indian government should act on this and take the necessary steps to reduce the percentage of people suffering from anaemia in the coming days.

Disgraceful act
It was painful to read about the Indian doctor who drugged his patient and raped her in the clinic (Indian doctor drugs patient, rapes her in clinic, KT, Oct 30). Doctors take the Hippocratic oath to serve the humanity with care and alleviate the sufferings. This doctor’s behaviour is appalling and he is a disgrace to the medical profession. He should not be allowed to practice and his licence should be revoked. Will the medical council act?

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 2Nov 17Remembering the beginning
Flag Day is the day people of the UAE remember their architect, Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE’s Founding Father, for his vision and foresight. All the Emirates will be celebrating this day and will pay their respects to the late leader. Flag Day also denotes the country’s feelings of justice, peace, tolerance and prosperity for all its people. I have attended this function on two occasions. The flag also represents the greatness of the country, to accommodating thousands of expatriates for a bright future.
