Letter Published in The National UAE on 31Jan 19 Honour Gandhi’s legacy by supporting India’s dalits
I write in reference to Rashmee Roshan Lall’s opinion piece Forced to fight their own fight: how Dalit women are caught in the crossfire between misogyny and casteism in India (January 30). On the 71st year of the late Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, India’s dalits still face discrimination in a casteist society. Political parties use this issue as a tool to win votes but successive governments have failed to eradicate the inequality. Someone must fulfil the dream of Mahatma Gandhi.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 30 Jan 19 Hollywood must catch up on the road to gender equalityI write in reference to your article Hollywood is changing but women still face an uphill battle(January 29). Gavin Esler has elaborately outlined the ways in which Oscar nominations are handled, and how they can be inequitable.Even though there is tremendous growth in filmmaking, scripting and direction, it is abhorrent how few African-American women directors working in Hollywood are given nominations today.Across the world, gender discrimination is waning and the film industry should catch up with that trend.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

Letter Published in The National UAE on 29Jan 19  It is time gender bias was eliminated in the workplaceI refer to Mina Al-Oraibi’s opinion piece It will take more than a top-down approach to close the gender pay gap (January 28). This was certainly an interesting read. The recent World Economic Forum meeting in Davos noted that gender bias is slowly eroding today but inequalities remain in some professional areas, including pay packets. It is high time this difference was eliminated as both genders are putting in equal effort in the workplace.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

I refer to your article The wheels are in motion to make the UAE truly inclusive for all (January 23). This editorial
was an interesting read. The word “disabled” has rightly been eradicated in the UAE and replaced by the phrase “people of determination” in the main public places.
It is laudable that Shobhika Kalra, co-founder of Wings of Angelz, has made more than 1,000 places wheelchair accessible in Dubai. And the emirate’s dedication to giving full access to people of determination by 2020 is remarkable. Dubai is certainly the destination for all.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 24Jan 19 Finally WhatsApp is tackling deadly Indian fake news
I write in reference to your article WhatsApp limits message forwarding to curb rumour spreading (January 22). This was an interesting piece and good to read. After so many lynchings and mob killing across India due to rumours and fake news spread on WhatsApp, the messaging service has now restricted its users from forwarding messages to less than 20 individuals. The mass forwarding of messages was how the fake news so quickly spread and this measure is an important one. I hope that many causalities caused by the spread of misinformation by people new to the technology can now be curtailed. This is a good move from WhatsApp.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 23Jan 19 It is up to the Indian people whether Modi stays or goes
I write in reference to the giant joint rally on Saturday by anti-Modi parties in Kolkata, India: the meeting in Kolkata between a cohort of parties to eliminate the present government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a big development in Indian politics.
On the one hand, I applaud their spirit and joint desire to eradicate the present administration but on the other, will all the parties nominate one person for prime minister if they are elected to power?
Opportunism and blame are the only currencies in modern politics. In my view, the BJP might not have fulfilled its full commitment but it has made some improvements and made a good name for India on the world stage.
Five years is a too short to judge the BJP. The opposition Congress was in power for decades and their achievements were hardly extraordinary.
Ultimately the Indian people will need to decide whether to eliminate or retain the present administration. The power is not with the opposition coalition but with the people.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 22 Jan 19 What’s the secret to such long life in Japan?
I write in reference to your article World’s oldest man, Masazo Nonaka, dies in Japan at 113(January 21). The recent death of the world’s oldest man and Guinness World Record holder in Japan was sad.
Even though people are living longer across the world, with life expectancy consistently rising, even with the support of drugs and modern medicine, very few of us can even hope to near the age of Nonaka. In that sense, his long life should be celebrated by all of us. In spite of progress elsewhere, Japan stands tall on the world map for life expectancy. One wonders what its secret is.

I write in reference to your article Death toll from Nairobi attack rises to 21 and 50 unaccounted for (January 17).
As Uhuru Kenyatta, the Kenyan president, said, 700 civilians were rescued from the Al Shabab siege on the upmarket Nairobi hotel and business complex last week.
This was a shred of good news amid the tragedy. Today the threat of violent terrorism is consistently growing with innocent civilians targeted in public places. It is both barbaric and unacceptable.
We often say it but the international community simply must join together to address this issue. Until then, I pray for the victims and their bereaved families.

Even decades back, when the former president Saddam Hussein was ruling Baghdad in his dictatorial manner, the city was more colourful and many tourists visited. After years of war and instability, it now appears that the city’s charm is returning, which is an excellent development. As Mr Alrawi has rightly claimed, Baghdad’s historical background and large supply of oil should see the city regain its former position of a great metropolis. Letter Published in The National UAE on 10Jan 19 The US can ill afford Trump administration’s shutdown   I refer to your article Walls are as much a state of mind as they are physical structures (January 9): Rashmee Roshan Lall’s opinion piece on how the recent US shutdown, which is now in its third week over the contentious US-Mexico border wall, could have made US President Donald Trump more popular with his base was an interesting read.In the history of the US administration, Mr Trump is the first leader to devise his own unique strategy to handle illegal immigration from Mexico, ostensibly to protect US borders and citizens. But while that might be a priority for Mr Trump and those who elected him, it is extremely unpalatable to others. As Ms Roshan Lall has rightly pointed out in this insightful piece, it is a certain state of mind that leads politicians and leaders to build walls. But in doing so, they often ignore other important aspects of governance, including trade, bilateral relationships with neighbours and tourism. If the wall is built – and perhaps even if it is not – the US will find itself isolated, which the nation can ill afford, despite its immense wealth. This is a sad state of affairs indeed.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

This meaningful and thought provoking article on the Coptic Orthodox Christian community and the solidarity extended by UAE’s Copts was good to read. The recent bomb blast, which killed a brave policeman who was trying to defuse the device is undoubtedly a tragedy. Today, terror threats are widening across the world in a manner that is both unacceptable and hugely alarming. In Egypt, it is the Christians who have been most targeted. The unrest in Kerala must be resolved peacefully

I write in reference to your article Third woman enters flashpoint Hindu temple in south India (January 4). The ongoing unrest in the south Indian state of Kerala, which started after two women entered the Sabarimala temple, has resulted in protesters clashing with police and beating journalists.
At the time of writing, 15 people had been injured and one has lost their life. This is deeply sad and comes after last year’s court order lifting the ban on women from entering the temple.
Hindu activists and traditionalists have broken the women’s wall organised to safeguard the entry for them, as per the court’s directive.
The Keralites are strong believers in old customs and traditions. This is a very complex matter. Will the issue be settled amicably? We will have to wait and see.

The 63-year-old leader has promised to eradicate corruption, crime and to promote economic development, which has not been the focus of previous leaders of the country.
However, there are big questions about him too.
Will he deliver all his pledges to the people of Brazil? Will he take the country back to its old position of rising prosperity?

Kumar Shyam’s nice analysis of the failures of the famous Khan trio in 2018 was a good read. My observation is that stereotypical characters should be avoided at all costs in the industry. Stories with substance and morals are what we need now. Aamir Khan is following this trend with his recent films. Saif Ali Khan has also acted extremely well in some recent films, but he needs to breathe fresh life into his career. Will the new year cause these popular Bollywood actors to change their strategies and return to their old fame?
