Letter Published in Gulf news UAE on 1July 16,  Wait and see
There is no second chance. After the referendum and the exit of Britain from the EU, there have been a lot of mixed reactions from Britons around the world. People saying that Britain should not have left after four decades of membership to the EU. Others are happier that Britain left from the EU for better days to come. Analysts are saying that corporate business houses and others will suffer and that the UK currency will suffer. Whatever be the consequences, Britain is going to face it and we will have to wait and see.

Sad State of affairs     Airstrikes have often taken the lives of innocent civilians, and it’s so sad. Despite many precautions, this happens. Airstrikes are inevitable because of more terror group expansions. Civilians should be protected. It’s a sad state of affairs.

Balanced mind

Human mind is fickle. Most of us seem to look for more reasons to grumble than appreciate. I have been planning to meet a friend who stays near my place, but could not do so due to heavy rain in recent days. Finally, I managed to meet him yesterday and while returning I got stuck in heavy rain. I reached home very late.

For a moment, I thought summer is any time better than winter and blamed the rain. I then introspected and realised that without rain, nations would suffer deeply. Drought has been posing major challenges to India too. Well, balance of mind in all situations seems to be the right path.

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 24 June 16,A loss for India
Raghuram Rajan brought India out of the fragile five and into the spotlight (‘Social media trend report: India on Raghuram Rajan’s exit decision’, Gulf News, June 20). Reserve Bank of India Governor Rajan’s decision of not continuing the second term and the mixed reactions among political circles and others is the latest dramatic development in India. When you look into his present tenure’s achievement of increasing the buying capacity of people both in the real estate and automobile industry, it is laudable by reducing the interest rate.
However, he has completely neglected the senior citizens’ interest rates on their deposits, which is really unfortunate. Overall, his vision to develop the economy was good. In India, no administrator is allowed to perform his duty without interference either at a political level or on a personal level. His departure is really a great loss for India and his academic expertise will be missed.

The recent murder of the UK Member of Parliament, Jo Cox, was the latest development in British politics (‘Britain mourns murdered lawmaker’, Gulf News, June 18). She was supporting Britain staying in the European Union (EU) and this murder might be due to her stance. However, nothing is clear. She was liked by the people of the UK and her murder is a great loss. Leaders like Hilary Clinton condemned her attack. She served in an aid agency for a decade and her work was applauded for her advances in women’s rights issues.

Mixed bag

Life is a mix of good and bad happenings. The other day I was sad while talking with a friend about the recent shooting incident in Orlando that claimed several lives.

At that time, my grandson, who is studying in Grade 1X, rushed towards me and conveyed the good news that his school had chosen him as the vice-captain for a Block. He asked for my blessings.

I realised that good and bad, cold and heat, pleasure and pain are all part of human life. All we need to do is to shed any hatred and join hands with good and loving people from all communities.

My View Published in Gulf News UAE on 17,June 16

Expression
Allow meaningful films to flourish
Art is meant to reflect real life like a mirror, and so, it should be taken in the right spirit. Indian art and film, especially, is known for its vibrant depiction of culture, tradition and values. Censoring films is important only when violence, sexually explicit scenes and other aspects directly affect a country’s reputation. When freedom of speech and expression are not going to affect the way a country is perceived, the film should not be disturbed. The Indian censor board is an organisation that considers the sensitivities of the nation, and it should deal with films carefully and respect the work of the film industry. If the movie’s subject has a social or moral message, or is educational and informative, any censor board would be expected to encourage such movies, as these would be of national interest. If the story lines and dialogues do not hurt the sentiments of people from any particular religion, the movie must be allowed to be screened. Clashes between politicians and filmmakers should be avoided, in the interest of society. On the other hand, filmmakers should also maintain proper ethics, by ensuring there is limited vulgarity in the films they screen. But when they make meaningful movies that depict reality, such films should not be mangled by the censor board. Due to incorrect judgments, individuals can end up facing both monetary loss and a damaged reputation. ‘Unbiased and meaningful’ should be the code of censor boards around the world. After all the backlash, I hope, in the coming days, the Indian censor board will function more effectively.

Should children be allowed to have smartphones?Age requirement necessary

Today smartphones are really helping people of all ages to learn more. It is like a mini computer. Children are welcome to use this device, but there should be an age requirement. If small children start using these devices, they devote more time to play and go through different apps, which will affect their studies. There should be a minimum age for using smartphones.

Visa joy

While on my usual evening walk along with a neighbour, I found him in a very good mood. When I asked him about the reason, he replied that he had got his visa approved and would be flying to Toronto shortly. I felt good too for my friend.

Interestingly, someone or the other in our neighbourhood goes abroad often either on an official trip or on holiday. I realised the world has indeed turned into a global village. I congratulated my friend also because he would be happier to stay with his son.

Being home with kith and kin is a real source of happiness. Right?

The recent visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Qatar, and the India — Qatar agreement on an intelligence pact is the latest dramatic development in the Middle East (‘India, Qatar agree intelligence pact to combat hawala, terror’, Gulf News, June 6). This would certainly enhance bilateral relationships, particularly with regards to labour and terror-related issues. Article Published in The Gulf Today UAE ON 4 June 16,(My Article 468)_

Friendly gift

The other day when I was about to pay my bill at a supermarket, I noticed an additional gift parcel added to my items.

When I enquired, the counter salesman pointed at a middle-aged person standing beside me. His face was familiar, but I failed to recollect his name. But by intuition I linked his name to a famous film personality.

When he greeted me, I recognised him by his voice and shouted in joy, “Abbas, when did you come to Bangalore?”

I knew him during the days I was working in the UAE. I used to jovially tell I would never forget his name, as it was the same as famous Bollywood director KA Abbas. He requested that I do not open the parcel until I reached home.

Controlling my curiosity, I waited until I reached home. The parcel had two pockets of dates.  I was so happy that my friend had gifted dates before the Holy Month of Ramadan. Whenever I used to meet him during the Holy Month in the UAE, he used to do the same.

Such good friends are indeed as sweet as the dates.
