Letter Published in The National UAE on 30 June 23 Is India ready for a uniform civil code? I write in reference to Taniya Dutta’s article Modi renews push for common law for a secular India (June 27): the Bharatiya Janata Party's determination to introduce the Uniform Civil Code is not new. It has been included in the party's manifesto in past elections as well. There might be some merit in the argument that India needs a common law that applies to all religious groups to administer marriages, divorces and property. But it is a contentious subject that will worry minority groups for various reasons. In any case, it will be a talking point with barely a year left before the next general election is due, so I expect heated debates in the months to come. K.Ragavan, Bengaluru,India

Tribute 772.

Tribute to My Friend K.V.Gopalan772 Today, I am compelled to write about an extraordinary individual who imparted invaluable knowledge and wisdom to me in my professional journey. This exceptional person is none other than my esteemed senior and close friend, K.V. Gopalan, who, enticed by the captivating world of the pharmaceutical industry, left his government job to join a renowned pharmaceutical company six decades ago. I had the pleasure of meeting him at a prominent clinic in Royapuram, where we introduced ourselves. At the time, I was newly employed by a Kolkata-based company, stationed at their Chennai headquarters, responsible for covering areas like Royapuram. After our introduction, he graciously invited me to a nearby restaurant, where we enjoyed a cup of tea and engaged in a delightful conversation lasting ten minutes. I immediately noticed his strong work ethic and his aversion to wasting time unnecessarily. During our discussion, he inquired about my area of expertise and where I resided. Upon learning that I did not possess a mode of transportation, he generously offered that I visit his house every evening between 4:00 PM and 4:30 PM from my residence in southMadras, as he owned a splendid motorbike. The following day, I embarked on my daily journey from Tambaram, my residence, to his abode in Kodambakkam via the electric train. I found this arrangement to be highly beneficial, as I was new to the area and yearned for expert guidance. By that time, K.V. Gopalan had accumulated three years of experience at the renowned British Drug House, granting him profound familiarity with the territory. I expressed my gratitude to the heavens for blessing me with such an exceptional friend and mentor. Sharp at 4:00 PM the next day, I arrived at his residence on Sarathy Street, near Kodambakkam station. He introduced me to his family members, and his mother kindly offered me tea, as she knew of my aversion to coffee. Observing my attire, K.V. Gopalan advised me against wearing a single knot tie and proceeded to demonstrate how to fasten a double knot, deemed the mark of an executive. Each day, he patiently instructed me on the art of presenting my products to various qualified doctors. Since my company had not provided any formal training, his guidance proved immensely valuable in presenting my products effectively. Most importantly, he instilled in me the courage to approach consultants and highly qualified professionals without fear, empowering me to deliver my product presentations in a sophisticated manner. Even after more than six decades, I still remember him fondly for his demeanor and the double knot tie. I consider myself blessed to have encountered such experienced and knowledgeable friends throughout my life. Today, I reflect upon this memorable individual and express my gratitude for the profound impact he had on me. K. Ragavan Until we meet next week, 26-6-23

Letter Published inThe NationalUAE on23 June 23 People’s health should not be put at risk I write in reference to Taniya Dutta’s article India shuts down 18 drug companies amid WHO probe (June 20): this is an excellent step by Indian Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. Apart from the fact that the recent controversies surrounding tainted cough syrups have undermined India’s reputation as the “pharmacy of the world”, it is important to understand that people’s lives, as well as their health and well-being, should never be put at risk. There can be no room for carelessness, corruption, or any kind of malpractice, in this regard. I am therefore very happy with this move. K Ragavan, Bengaluru, India

Letter Published in The National UAE on 16June 23,Denver mass shootings: when does it end? About the report Nine wounded in Denver mass shooting after Nuggets win NBA Finals (June 13): When will the US control its gun violence issues? Two people are critically injured. And this shooting took place where lots of people were celebrating the game's result after midnight. Not only is it condemnable but also unacceptable in a civil society like the US. It's a sad state of affairs if gun violence in American schools instead of ending spills over into sports arenas. K Ragavan, Bengaluru, India

Tribute 770.

Tribute to Unsung Heroes of Training Physically Challenged 770 Today, I thought of giving tribute to the people from all walks of life, namely teaching and coaching, who selflessly train physically disabled individuals in the field of Information Technology (I.T.) and help them secure various job positions. Such efforts should not be ignored. I have a few friends who are involved in these activities without seeking any publicity, and their dedication to assisting deserving individuals is admirable. Recently, one of my good old friends from the pharmaceutical industry invited me to visit his daughter's place. A few days ago, I visited his daughter and son-in-law and was amazed by their involvement with physically challenged individuals, including those without vision. They provide training and placement opportunities, which brought me great happiness. What's even more astonishing is that both the husband and wife left their jobs in the USA to start a tremendous foundation project, Win Vinayafoundation, out of sheer passion for helping the deserving. Their commitment should be highly appreciated. Apart from my friend's family members, many others are engaged in similar activities, assisting the deserving without expecting any awards or recognition. Their dedication is truly amazing. Today, I pay tribute to these unsung heroes, as they indirectly contribute to the development of skills in physically challenged individuals and help our nation progress. K. Letter Published inThe National UAE on 9 June 23 Accountability needed in India bridge collapse This is a sad state of affairs preceded by the Odisha train disaster. Opposition parties have been alleging lack of involvement by the authorities who were assigned to this mammoth project across the river, and questioning the quality of raw materials used for construction. Allegations of corruption have come up. But whatever the actual reasons, it is unacceptable that a bridge should collapse once, let alone twice. This is unacceptable. Administrators in Bihar will have to answer tough questions. The state should take responsibility for the projects in their region. Will this project will be carried on and good strategies employed by engineers in the future, and how long will it now take to complete is another question. K.Ragavan,Bengaluru, India

Tribute 769.

Tribute to Producer, Actor, and Director L.V. Prasad Today, I am set to delve into the captivating persona of a South Indian film legend who made a mark as an actor, producer, and director—L.V. Prasad. This remarkable man left an indelible impression on the Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi film industries, and this is no exaggeration. The quality of today's actors have graced the silver screen in his masterpieces. His films exuded family-oriented themes, accompanied by compelling narratives, well-crafted screenplays, and powerful dialogues. The music, infused with melodious tunes, and the cinematography were also praiseworthy. Though he had a prolific career in acting, production, and direction, I have had the privilege of witnessing a few memorable movies created by this luminary. Some of these films include Chhoti Bahen (Hindi), Jeene Ki Raah, Shaadi Ke Baad (Hindi), Missiamma, Manohara, Iruvar ullam, and Kadan vaan gi kalyanam (Tamil). He received the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his outstanding contributions to the industry—a significant milestone. Establishing his own studio and renowned recording theater, L.V. Prasad garnered immense admiration from his peers in the film fraternity. His studio became the go-to destination for recording and shooting Bollywood films. The banner of his production house, Prasad Productions, enjoyed great popularity. Although the smart and affable L.V. Prasad is no longer with us today, his invaluable contributions to Indian cinema will forever be etched in our memories. Warm regards, K. Ragavan Until we meet next week. 5-6-23

Letter Published in The National UAE on2 June 23The inauguration of India's new Parliament building With regard to Chitrabhanu Kadalayil's op-ed India may have needed a newer parliament building, but did it really need a bigger one? (May 30): As an Indian, I was upset that 19 parties did not participate in the event, despite their reasons. India is a vast country comprising of many states, languages and political parties. Such an event should not have been neglected by them. Domestic problems should not be visible on momentous occasions such as these. K Ragavan, Bengaluru, India
