The pictures and videos from the site have been incredible all these months. And I have been reading the coverage with great interest. The sheer number of visitors has been amazing, despite the hurdles of this past year, including Covid-19. It shows how capable UAE is of pulling off an event to match all global standards. Letter Published in The National UAE on 25Mar 22 Water girl makes the residents of her former city proud With reference to Fehmida Zakeer's article Meet 'the water girl of India' helping the world to cut consumption (March 22): it was really good to read about the enterprise of 21-year-old Garvita Gulhati. It is quite an achievement to devise clever ways to cut water consumption and the views of the engineering graduate were interesting. In developing the app, she, like so many of her generation's climate volunteers, has shone bright and made India proud. People need to be much more conscious of how much water they use, and not just on a few days a year when the spotlight is on the issue. It makes me happy to see that she studied in Bengaluru. She makes the city and resident like me very proud. K Ragavan, Bengaluru, India

Letter Published in The National UAE on 11Mar 22Tragedy in Kerala I write in reference to Taniya Dutta's article House fire kills five family members in Kerala (March 8): it was sad to read about the recent fire accident in the southern Indian state of Kerala. While this is not a strike against Kerala itself, I wonder whether the country has experienced one too many fire accidents in recent months. While even one accident is one too many, it has become a regular fixture in the national news lately. The main problem is poor implementation of the necessary safety standards. Is there apathy among builders, contractors, authorities and the public at large? Not everyone can be painted with the same brush, but surely it exists among some of them. This needs to stop. Letter PublisheD IN The National UAE on 4Mar 22 .Indian student's death is a tragedy I write in reference to Leen Alfaisal's video Indian student killed in Ukraine shelling and 16000 remain trapped (March 2): it is always depressing to learn about the lives lost in conflict. It is one thing for soldiers to go into battle knowing they may never return. It is entirely another for civilians to get caught in a crossfire, or worse, be targeted by enemy forces. Why do they have to die? What have they done to deserve death? Can there be no way to protect them better? These are some of the questions that occurred to me when I learned about the death of an Indian medical student in Ukraine. Naveen Shekharappa Gyanagoudar was only 21 years old. Had it not been for the war, he may well have become a medical practitioner one day, perhaps saving the lives of others. Instead, his life was cruelly snatched for no fault of his.
