Letter Published in The National UAE on 28Feb 19 India and Pakistan must not escalate tensions further Two Indian jets have now been shot down in Pakistani airspace, following the recent Pulwama attack by Jaish-e-Mohammad that killed 40 Indian soldiers. I believe that most Indian citizens stand behind prime minister Narendra Modi, who decided to strike targets in Pakistan in response. People in both countries have waited for decades for friendly relations but Mr Modi is determined to make decisions that will safeguard his people. There is bound to be fervent debate on this but Mr Modi’s decision is justified in my view.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

Letter Published in The National UAE on 27Feb 19 Arab talent was on show at the Oscars this yearI write in reference to your piece Oscars offered a real life fairytale ending (February 26): The National's editorial on the Oscars was an interesting and enlightening read. In the past, the Oscars awards have mostly been dominated by actors from the western world. But this time, the Arab world was celebrated at the prestigious awards show. Most celebrated was Rami Malek, raised in the US by Egyptian parents, who picked up the best actor Academy Award for his role in the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. Immense creative and innovative talent is visible today across the Arab world. Figures like Malek are laudable.Egypt is itself known for its extraordinary cultural history and now it is receiving due credit in the global cinema industry too.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

Letter Published in The National UAE on 26Feb 19 Bashir should take action on economic developmentI refer to your article Sudan’s Omar Al Bashir dissolves government as he declares state of emergency (February 23). This piece on the latest developments in Sudan was a fascinating read. With three decades of military rule behind him, and following weeks of protests, president Omar Al Bashir has declared a state of emergency in Sudan. It demonstrates his intention to bid for another presidential term in the coming 2020 election. In the coming weeks, he should take action on economic development and welfare. As ever, the people of Sudan have a right to a peaceful and prosperous life, underpinned by government induced development. We can only hope Mr Al Bashir’s cabinet replacements and new powers will help to bring that about. Whatever the outcome, this will have major implications for Sudan’s global status.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

The proposal of the Indian high school in Dubai to allocate one-and-a-half days a week for hobbies is laudable. In my native country of India, I have seen many parents encouraging their children to take up interesting, often highly educational hobbies. And once cultivated, they do not easily disappear. This is with reference to Priyanka Gandhi’s entry into Indian politics (“Priyanka factor promises an exciting poll battle”, Gulf News, January 29). The Indian Congress party president, Rahul Gandhi’s recent Uttar Pradesh (UP) launch of an additional secretary for Eastern UP made sensational news. It was an expected one but little late. For more than three decades, the Congress was not ruling UP and with this Congress is expecting a turning point in UP politics. Priyanka Gandhi not only resembles her grandmother, Indira Gandhi, but is accepted by the people of UP. The state is the main target for all the political parties in the 2019 elections.

I refer to your article The American dream is dead for Indian techies – now they’re looking elsewhere (February 6): Rashmee Roshan Lall’s meaningful article on Indian tech workers was good. Various restrictions on visas in the US, Australia and other countries for Indian techies means they will look elsewhere. A recent sting operation in the US showed America’s negative feelings towards migration from India.
The only solution for ambitious technology workers is to go further afield. Political will from Indian politicians is sorely needed to retain them and make use of their capabilities.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 3 Feb 19 Finally, the Indian budget puts the people first    I refer to your article Sops for Indian farmers and middle class in election year budget (February 2). The recent Indian interim budget addressed some of the country’s most pressing issues, including the farmers’ loan waiver and assured annual income for their families. The income tax limit was also extended up to five Lakhs, from betwen two and five, which is a great relief for middle class workers. A pension for laborours is another highlight. As usual, opposition parties have expressed some displeasure, but overall this is a budget for the people. This budget reflects the will of Narendra Modi’s government to provide for the middle class, which have been neglected in the past. The opposition claim this budget is designed simply to win votes in upcoming Lok Sabha elections, but if it helps ordinary Indians, the intentions are irrelevant. Kudos to Finance Minister Piyush Goyal.K Ragavan, Bengaluru
