Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 30 Dec 17,Promises made need to be kept
I have been watching the Indian parliament and Indian politics for more than five decades. Whoever comes to power won’t fulfil their promises to the people. I do agree that it is not possible to fulfil all promises, but at least 50 per cent of them can help the country develop. All the political parties want to retain their power and do not bother with actual development of the country. Today, every political party is blaming the other party. All the members of parliament are responsible for running and using the taxpayer’s money for development. India is the largest democratic country in the world. The present National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government is trying it’s best to develop but has been branded as a communal party by the opposition. According to me, neither is the present ruling party is communal, nor the opposition. I do not belong to any political party but I raise my voice for the lower income groups and the common man. The present NDA government has certain policies that make me unhappy. They have completely neglected the senior citizen bank deposit interest rate. Those senior citizens getting the pension depending only on their deposit interest, will find it difficult to make both ends meet because of inflation and meagre bank interest. I appeal to the present NDA Government to revise the bank interest rate for deposits for senior citizens.

I refer to your article Subtitles improve reading skills in India (December 27). The article elaborately explains the advantages of having subtitles in the same language. The UAE has many subtitled films in cinemas. In an era of scarce reading, this has become a luxury.

It was harrowing to read that the victims were all from the same family. Their driver brought them to their fate by recklessly attempting to overtake a larger bus. This is a perfect example of how dangerous overtaking can be on narrow roads.K Ragavan, India

Letter Published inThe National UAE on 26Dec 17,It is no surprise the UAE is the largest aid donorYour article UAE world largest donor of official development aid (December 25) was a heart-warming read. The UAE is not only known for its local development, but also for its international philanthropy, sending much-needed medicine supplies to zones affected by malaria and polio. This is because of the long-term philanthropic vision adopted by President Sheikh Khalifa and Vice President Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid. Kudos to the UAE.K Ragavan, India

Letter Published in KhaleejTimes UAE on 25DEc 17,      2G Scam  What about it?   It was a shocker, to say the least. The 2G scam is one of the biggest scams to have surfaced in India. Nine years after it was reported, the Indian court in its verdict on December 21 acquitted all the 16 accused. The CBI and Enforcement Directorate took years to gather information and had filed a thick report with pages full of observations. The judgement has jolted the entire nation. Whether the NDA will appeal to the Supreme Court or not is something we have to wait and see.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 25 Dec 17The decision to cut the cost of medicines is laudable
I refer to your article Ministry of Health announces 24 per cent price cut on some medicines(December 23). The decision of the Ministry of Health to offer price cuts on medicines is good news. Long-term treatment for cancer, diabetes and joint pains, and the provision of cheaper medicines for bacterial infections and other disorders, will help patients. Medicines are expensive all over the world and this move by the UAE government to help its people is laudable.

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 25 Dec 17,Every year on December 25, Christmas festival is celebrated throughout the globe with peace and joy. Friends and relatives visit their homes, greet each other, offer cakes, fruits and other festive food. Families go to church to pray to God and attend mass. I still remember that on Christmas day, when I was in the UAE, two of my friends invited me to their house and even though I was unable to go to visit them, they came to meet me with cakes and fruits, which I admire. Being in the UAE, I go to my friend’s place to celebrate the occasion and greet him and his family.

UN Jerusalem vote must pave the way for more discussion
In reference to your article How countries voted on Jerusalem's status at the General Assembly(December 22), the recent dramatic vote at the UN General Assembly on Jerusalem's status in favour of the Palestinians was a welcome move. Verdict in India’s biggest anti-corruption saga anti-climactic The irony is that despite so many lengthy reports and enforcement agency investigations, the verdict came in a matter of minutes, much to the joy of those under trial. And just like that, such a huge alleged scam, which generated so many headlines at the time, is gone with the wind. I wonder if the government will submit an appeal to the supreme court.

Future victory written? The recent Indian exit poll results indicate that the victory for the ruling party, the BJP, in both the states Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, was the latest development in Indian politics. With so much criticism from the opposition parties mainly from the Congress Party’s leader, Rahul Gandhi on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s demonetisation and GST, the exit polls favoured the BJP. Gujarat was the high ground for Modi and was ruled by his party for more than two decades. Will the real results favour the BJP? We will have to wait and see.

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 20 Dec 17,A safari for everyone
The much awaited Dubai Safari park will be opened to the public next year and it is good news for the people of the UAE (“Monday, Wednesday for families only at Dubai Safari”, Gulf News, December 17). This park has been designed for many animals and is spread over a vast area. Children and adults of all ages can plan and enjoy a one-day tour in this sophisticated safari park. Conveyance is available from all the emirates and it ensures easy accessibility for all. It is an ambitious plan for the UAE and will certainly attract the international tourists as well, because of the variety of animals. People can watch the animals walking casually while being in a safer position. I would like to congratulate the UAE for presenting this wonderful park, not only to the UAE people but also to international tourists.

Unwanted comments and actions

The unwanted comment by Congress politician Mani Sankar Aiyer shows his nature and how he does not respect other politicians (“Congress suspends Aiyar from primary membership over ‘neech’ remark”, Gulf News, December 8). They should know not to make such comments about their opponents. They should behave with respect and dignity, especially when they pass comments about the Prime Minister, who represents 1.2 billion people. Congress has done a good thing to suspend him from the party. This should be permanent. Modi’s reply to his comment was nice and shows his gentleness. Aiyer has lost his reputation not only in his party but also to the entire nation. It is a sad state of affairs.

Rahul Gandhi needs to prove his worth as a politicianYour article Rahul Gandhi nomination highlights India's dynasty politics (December 7) rings true with me. The nomination of 45-year-old Gandhi was welcomed by the Indian National Congress party despite the fact that there are many capable senior leaders who can do the job better. What is the criteria for his nomination? That he is the son of its leader? It has become abundantly clear that the Congress party is dominated by the Nehru dynasty. This might be something the party can stomach, not the people, at least not until he demonstrates his worth as a politician.

Happiness is subjective
Happiness comes when you give something to people in any form, as charity, food, education, medical aid or any other help. This is the usual thing everyone does for society. My happiness is different. It is not involved in finance or other charity. I raise my voice for the problems of the common man, in his day to day life through the print media. It has helped few incidents and has made me happier. For example, street lights not working, senior citizen reservations and reduction in card payment and few other things. After my retirement I am devoting my time to these things. This is my spirit of giving for the past nine years.

I refer to your article UN appeals for record $22.5bn in global aid for 2018 (December 2). It is obvious that aid requirements are increasing with each passing year, whether due to the increase in refugees and war zones or because of increasing costs and populations. The humanitarian disasters in Syria and Yemen are taking their toll on aid budgets, despite the fact that aid requirements in some countries have actually decreased. Whether the United Nations will be able to meet these figures is another question.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 4 Dec 17US-North Korea tensions seem to be reaching a hiatus
I refer to your article Likelihood of war against North Korea is “increasing every day” (December 3). Kim Jong-un's illegal missile tests are provocative on any given day, but matters are reaching a hiatus now that the administration is officially citing war as a possibility. Will that prompt the peninsula to calm the game or will they continue to flex their muscles?

Strengthening ties
The Indian city of Hyderabad was busy with the arrival of Ivanka Trump for the business summit (“Ivanka Trump a ‘rockstar’ in India, despite criticism”, Gulf News, November 30). In her delegation, Trump wanted to promote economic reforms and women entrepreneurship in India. More than 150 countries sent their delegates to attend this massive summit. Last year’s Indo-US two ways trade worth $115billion was laudable. With Trump’s visit and her strategy to strengthen this relationship will further enhance the development for both the countries. Hyderabad is known as an Information Technology (IT) hub and has produced many talented software engineers to the US. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is doing his best to establish a global image for India and Trump’s visit is also one among them.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 3 Dec 17,The battle to win over voters in Gujarat is important on many fronts
India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wheels out big guns in Gujarat for elections in its stronghold (December 1) was an interesting read. The battle for Gujarat is not only important for the BJP but also the opposition Congress party to prove its existence. The way in which prime minister Narendra Modi is campaigning for this election clearly indicates that he wants to retain his party's power in the state for a fifth consecutive term. Will the BJP's strategy succeed against the Congress's powerful attacks, centred on the goods and services tax and the demonetisation scheme? Ultimately the people will decide.

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 2 Dec 17,Visionary leadership
Every year, December 2 is celebrated as National Day in all the Emirates. Today the UAE consists of seven emirates with Abu Dhabi as the capital, followed by Dubai, known for its trading and tourist destination, Sharjah for culture, Ajman as an upcoming industrial emirate, followed by Al Fujarah, Ras Al Khimah and Um AL Quwain. In the past four and half decades, the UAE has developed remarkably in all areas, particularly tourism and trading. Today, the UAE is on the global map. The credit for this goes to late Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE’s founding father. His philosophy was followed by his son, His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. On National Day, various cultural programmes, fireworks and car rallies will be organised. People come in large numbers and enjoy the celebration. It will be colourful on that day. Having spent 16 Years in the UAE I wish the UAE and its people, a very happy, healthy and peaceful life.
