The shocking revelation of Parasuram Waghmare who was framed by SIT in Gauri Lankesh murder case is the latest dramatic development in this one-year-old case, writes K Ragavan. Letter Published in The National UAE on 30Sep 18With more travel options in India, no trip is impossible
I was delighted by the news that the Indian state of Sikkim has got its first airport, India’s 100th such facility. The fact that the country has constructed 100 airports is laudable. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government are determined to connect India’s North Eastern region with the rest of the country and an airport in Sikkim, which borders Bhutan, is an excellent step. With the rapid advancement of travel options at all price points, travellers are able to reach all four corners of India, with important economic and cultural implications.

I write in reference to your article Nelson Mandela legacy dominates UNGA opening ceremony (September 25): Damien McElroy’s article was an interesting read. The recent decision from the UN to declare a Nelson Mandela Decade of Peace was a very welcome development at a fraught UNGA. This is a fitting tribute for the late South African leader, honouring his diplomacy and pursuit of peace. I write in reference to your article Anti-government group claims deadly attack on military parade in Iran (September 23): The National’s moving article on the attack in Iran that killed innocent women and children was sad to read. The deadly incident was reportedly perpetrated by an Arab separatist group and Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s finger-pointing at the US lacks credibility.

As with all acts of terrorism, this incident is unacceptable. I pray for the innocent people killed in the attack. What a sad state of affairs.

I refer to your article India 'arrogant' for cancelling rare meeting says Pakistan’s Imran Khan (September 24): on the one hand, I applaud Mr Khan’s desire to have peace talks with India but on the other, the recent brutal killings of three Indian soldiers in Kashmir justifiably made India change its mind. It is sad that whenever peace looks possible, tragedies take pleace.
Pakistan’s prime minister should have used more diplomatic language rather than calling India “arrogant”. After 71 years of conflict, this is a sad state of affairs.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 24 Sep 18Offenders’ register in India could reduce sex crime
In reference to your article India launches first national register of sex offenders (September 22), this elaborate article on the introduction of a sex offenders’ register in India was a welcome read.
The names it will contain will only be accessible to law enforcement agencies and not in the public domain. As a result, with this new arrangement, the individual privacy of offenders will not be compromised.
The decision to set up a database was taken by the Indian government because sexual assaults have been rife in the country in recent years and the number of women raped is on the rise.
I hope with this new database that there will be an immediate decline in cases of sexual violence and it can be eradicated altogether.

Letter Published in The National UAE on  23Sep 18Air passenger safety must always come first
In reference to the recent mid-air drama on Jet Air in India (Jet Air flight returns to Mumbai with passengers suffering nosebleeds after ‘crew pressure error’, September 20), I was concerned to read that purely because of the negligence of crew members, who failed to flick a switch in the cabin, passengers had to suffer nosebleeds and a few were more seriously affected.
This latest development from the Indian airline should be investigated thoroughly. Authorities should inquire and suspend crew members who are responsible for this.
Air travel of late has become extremely tough for passengers. The aviation body should take proper action and warn Jet Air to ensure such incidents don’t re-occur in future. This is a sad state of affairs.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 20 Sep 18,Warm wishes to both the Indian and Pakistani cricket teams
I refer to your article The UAE’s ‘home’ game: India and Pakistan cricket fans get ready for latest chapter in fierce sporting rivalry (September 19). The landmark Asian Cup match between India and Pakistan in Dubai was very good news for the residents of the UAE. Millions of people – Indians, Pakistanis and other nationalities – watched on television and in the stadium. More than two decades ago, India and Pakistan played in Sharjah Cricket Stadium and later stopped for security reasons. The return of this meeting of teams has been rightly heralded.
I watched many matches in Sharjah Stadium when I was living in the UAE and enjoyed the immense spirit of the UAE’s cricket fans, who deserve to be entertained by both national teams. Ultimately, feats of sporting prowess should be admired, whatever the result. Given the weighty expectations on both sides, I wished both of them good luck.

Letter Published in The National UAEon 17Sep 18 A three-day weekend could benefit bosses and workers
I write in reference to your article A three-day weekend could boost productivity all round (September 14): The National’s editorial article on the virtues of a four-day week was an interesting read and offered a very logical argument. In the past, people advocated for a one-day weekend and then that was changed to two days. Now research reveals that a three-day weekend would boost productivity and morale in the workplace.
Already the Bosch engineering firm in the UAE has said it would consider introducing this concept. But the question remains: will they increase working hours on the four days that their employees actually do work?
A three-day weekend would certainly allow employees to recharge fully before returning to work. And once the mind is stress-free, productivity would certainly increase, with positive consequences for companies. It remains to be seen whether this will be accepted globally.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 13Sep 18Fuel prices in India take their toll on the common man
I write in reference to your article Indian opposition leads nationwide protests over high fuel prices(September 11). The recent strike this week spurred by increased fuel prices in India and followed by vandalism by the protesters is a troubling development for the country. Unfortunately, fuel prices are usually not the same across the nation and vary from state to state. Despite the fluctuation of the international oil price, the prices for Indian consumers are fixed. That in itself is not a bad thing, but there is no uniformity nationwide and as a result the common man suffers. Those in power appear unable to remedy this. Protests should be peaceful and there is never any excuse for looting and damaging public property, but their grievances are somewhat justified.

No sum can truly compensate lives lost in bridge collapse
Regarding your story about the Kolkata bridge collapse (September 5), the disaster that struck the 40-year-old Majerhat highway on Tuesday, leaving three fatalities and at least 25 injured, was tragic to read. Many cars and vehicles fell from a great height and metro workers were trapped.
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Bannerjee has ordered a high level inquiry, led by a committee, to investigate the real cause for the collapse amid fears at least 20 bridges in the city are unsafe. She said many were past their expiry date.
This incident is unacceptable and there are concerns that poor construction could be the reason behind the bridge collapsing.
The guilty should not be spared. In recent months, there have been many similar incidents around the globe.
Not only are these incidents heartbreaking for all but no amount of compensation can bring back lost lives.

In reference to your article Abu Dhabi healthcare providers start dispensing generic drugs (August 31), today healthcare globally is very expensive, particularly diabetic drugs, which patients have to continue to take for their entire lives.
Buying branded items makes it even more so. Abu Dhabi healthcare providers will soon offer generic drugs and this is a good move.
It will certainly be beneficial for the patients who cannot afford branded items.
Having spent three decades in the pharmaceutical industry, I know branded items are more expensive than generic ones.
