Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 31 Aug 18   A great loss
This is in reference to the demise of American Politician John McCain (“‘Miss you’: Arizona remembers John McCain, its ‘most fascinating son’”, Gulf News, August 28). For more than three decades he was the senator and a war hero who was liked by one and all. He was suffering from carcinoma and few days ago, he stopped his medication. This was the cause of his early departure. His death is a great loss for American politics. May his soul rest in peace.

Tribute to Hegde ;Our own VajpayeeK Ragavanadds: The author has brilliantly analysed Ramakrishna Hegde and his lofty principles. Hegde is the one leader who rose above caste-based politics. He stood high above caste and communal politics. He symbolised the politics of inclusivity and never divided society for electoral gains, a political practice widely in vogue now. Kannadigas can never forget such a tall leader

Regarding your story Police seeking motive in Florida shooting that left two dead (August 27), the recent shooting that claimed two lives and injured 11 injured in Florida at a video game tournament was terrible to read.
While the reason for this shooting is not yet known and an investigation is ongoing, in recent months there have been many incidents like this taking place in various states and yet still US authorities have not reinforced laws concerning gun licences.
It is high time the Trump administration solved this problem to stop any more casualties in the future.

RIP, Somnath Chatterjee
K.Ragavan

Chatterjee's life was based on principles, and his calmness allowed him to be a good human being.

Indian politics has lost another great son. The communist leader and former Lok Sabha Speaker (lower house of parliament), Somnath Chatterjee, died at the age of 89 years after suffering from a heart attack. The veteran leader had spent about five decades in politics and was a well-respected figure. He gathered flak from his party for not resigning from the post of the speaker after his party withdrew support from the government. Yet, he was liked by one and all from all political parties, which is an admirable quality in itself.

Where have the medicines gone?
Some of the centres set up by the Centre to provide subsidised but quality medicines don’t have stock. Many prescription drugs for important conditions like hypertension and diabetes are out of stock in many of the 35 kendras in the city (out of the 336 in the State). Patients say they are forced to buy medicines from regular stores at market prices. K Ragavan says: As per statistics, Karnataka has more sales on these products and why there is no stock should be investigated. Authorities concerned should make all those medicines available freely to avoid disappointment from patients. It’s sad to read that the main purpose of the concept itself is defeated .tial in compounding this problem.

The popular brand behind a major portion of computers and cell phones has been listed as the first $1 trillion company and this was great news. This also comes as good news for its millions of users. Quality, reputation and public response are the main instruments in the success of Apple. That is the reason apple has become a household product. The name is also catchy and attractive. Letter Published in The National UAE on 7Aug 18 Violence is never the answer when politics causes divides I write in reference to your article Venezuelan president blames Colombia for ‘assassination attempt’(August 6): the recent drone attack, allegedly designed to assassinate the Venezuelan president, Nicholas Maduro, warrants international condemnation. The claims of Mr Maduro that the perpetrators of the attack were Colombian were interesting and surprising, as was the fact that a mysterious rebel group later claimed the failed attack. However, both claims will need to be investigated and ultimately to be proved.Today, as in the past, attempted assassinations of political leaders are concerning and such acts should be eradicated. Who can forget the terrible assassination of US president John F Kennedy? In the polarised modern world, where conflict is rife, safety and peace are more necessary than ever. Disagreements over ideology and politics are normal and important but violence is never the answer.K Ragavan, Bangalore

Letter Published in The National UAE on 6Aug 18An Apple a day keeps the boredom away
With reference to your story Apple becomes the world’s first trillion dollar company (August 2), the news that the popular brand behind computers and the iPhone has been listed as the first $1 trillion company was great news.
It’s also good news for its millions of users. Quality, reputation and public response are the main instruments in the success of Apple.
The jump of 2.8 per cent in the tech company’s stock value was impressive. I find an Apple iPhone lifts the mundanity of the daily routine. Kudos to the company.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 5Aug 18  Fake news and technological advances could be dangerous
I write in reference to Rashmee Roshan Lall’s article Deepfake technology could create huge potential for social unrest and even trigger wars (August 1): your writer’s opinion piece was meaningful and very accurate.
Today we have reached an extremely dangerous point where more and more technology is being developed with increasing sophistication and as a result, news which is fake or has been manufactured is spreading even further and being passed off as real news.
Ms Roshan Lall is right to point out that this combination could bring about social unrest and even casualties in developed societies.
Much of the blame lies with us for providing plenty of information for hackers to exploit.
This was a well-written and very informative article.

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 3Aug ust 18  The Khan of Pakistan
This is in reference to the recent Pakistan election result, which declared former Pakistani Cricketer, Imran Khan, as the winner (“India PM Modi speaks to Imran Khan, calls for neighbourhood peace”, Gulf News, July 31). Unfortunately he needs majority seeking coalition partners who are like-minded and will help him eradicate corruption and clean the current administration. Will Khan succeed in his attempt or will we have to wait and see?

Letter Published in Bangalore Mirror Bangalore India On 30July 18 (late posting)Both MSD and Iyer are correct
On the story ‘Don’t read papers: MSD to Iyer’, K Ragavan writes it was a meaningful and thought-provoking article. On the one hand, he applauds MS Dhoni’s advice not to read papers because it can affect concentration for the game and on the other Shreyas Iyer’s argument that criticism only gives him for motivation and doing his job better too is valid. By in their view pointsoth the players are correct in their own way
