Network trouble

Life has become too interlinked with mobile phones. A day without the phone can leave one restless.

Unfortunately, a technical defect in my phone has left it in such a condition that while I can make calls, I am unable to receive them.

I have been using a popular brand network for the past seven years. I have been told that the network disturbance is due to Metro work near my place.

I joked with a friend that if “receiving” is not possible, life is too tough. He understood what I meant (both money and communication) and had a hearty laugh.

The recent Washington Mall shooting that killed five people in the US would have been traumatic for residents (‘US mall shooting suspect in custody’, Gulf News, September 26). Although the shooting was not organised by known terror groups, the motive behind it was not clear. Police arrested one 20-year-old, of Turkish origin. This incident must be condemned and I hope the authorities come out with more information on this. Despite many shooting incidents in malls and schools in the US, they are not keen to eradicate their gun culture, which is sad. I pray for the victims and the grieving family members.

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE On 30 ,16, Strikes and their implications
If a community’s normal routine is disturbed, people will be affected both locally and globally was true (‘Boycotting all-party meet on Cauvery row: Karnataka BJP’, Gulf News, September 22). This happens mainly due to strikes by workers, unions and other parties who will stop their work and not allow for the necessary daily functions to happen. Of course, this is allowed legally in many countries. On one hand, I applaud people protesting for their rights to get their things done peacefully, but on the other hand if the people turn to violence, this is not acceptable.
Recently in my city, Bengaluru, India, a peaceful strike turned into violent one with looting and the destruction of public property. This protest is due to water sharing between two states. If you look into the total damage of this protest, you can make arrangements for solving the water crisis. Mobs with illiteracy and anger is one of the main causes for this.
The government should implement a law if public property is damaged, that those criminals will be taken to task on the spot. When a government allows for strike, they should be prepared for the eventualities without hesitation to punish any criminals. That will reduce the huge loss on damages and casualties. Will the government look into this valid point whenever strikes are allowed? As an Indian citizen, I strongly condemn the damage of public property. I hope in the future protests will be peaceful.

The recent rains that lashed the Indian state of Telangana made life very difficult for people going out (‘Rain fury turns life upside down in Hyderabad’, Gulf News, September 24). Schools, colleges and other establishments weren’t functioning because of Nature’s fury. Some casualties were also reported. The government should speed up the relief work and people should be evacuated from the low level areas. Still, infrastructure is a question mark on roads in this IT hub.

Is it a citizen’s responsibility to consider a presidential candidate’s health before voting? Do you care about this issue? It depends
Health condition is important for a president before a citizen is opting him/her for the chair. If the conditions are common and can be cured without major actions like you would with cancer and any cardiovascular disorders, then I think it’s okay. Major ailments will affect his/her administrative delivery during the tenure of four years. Otherwise, normal ailments aren’t going to disturb his/her delivery.

Promises to keep

My grandson informed that he would spend his holidays with me on one condition: I should narrate to him investigative stories and buy his favourite chocolate. In turn, I told him he should play “tabla” and dance, which he is good at. Now that we have reached an agreement, I am eagerly awaiting his visit from his place.

Using one’s time productively and prudent spending of money are two aspects I feel are very important for everyone. I am happy that the little boy has promised to keep this in mind.

For a retired person, spending time with grandchildren is a great blessing, indeed.

This is the second incident within a year on this campus. Students go to university to study and form a bright career. These types of incidents are unacceptable. The authorities at the university must find out the real reason for this and the Indian government should order a probe to investigate. Modi and the President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani met to end state-sponsored terrorism. Already, India and Afghanistan have a good relationship, regarding trade and bilateral issues. This recent meeting will further enhance their relationship in all areas, and their agreement on how terrorism should be fought was a good development. Afghanistan is already facing a nightmare every day with terror attacks and innocent civilians becoming victims. With the new strategy, both countries can help each other regarding terrorism and other important issues, like education, healthcare, agriculture, skill development and women’s empowerment, which both countries are currently highlighting. I hope this meeting will bring closer ties. Both nations are against terrorism and want to contribute to a peaceful and stable region.

Friendly move

A close friend has just returned to our hometown for good after three decades in the splendid country of the UAE.

The best thing I learnt from him when I was also there was humour.

We had attended many events in Sharjah together and I cannot forget the fact that he introduced me to the Toastmasters International Club there.

Initially very shy to speak in public, I picked up a lot after attending those sessions.

This jovial person helped instil positive thoughts in my mind and hence I am happy that he is back in action among our group.

It is true that happy people spread happiness wherever they go.

Mobile phones will certainly distract students in school. Even though access to useful information has its benefits, the fact is that the temptation of spending more time with mobile phones is inevitable. In my opinion, until a child reaches a certain age, he/she shouldn’t own a phone. No doubt, smartphones are very useful in today’s age, for communicating and other important aspects, but schoolchildren should only be allowed to have them after a certain age.

Double joy

I recently met an old friend at a function in my city. He was very happy to see me after 12 years. We discussed our UAE days where he had spent ten years.

Once he lost his purse at a mall in Dubai after paying the bill through his credit card. When we reached a nearby restaurant, he realised that his wallet was missing. I immediately suggested that we rush back to that mall.

We met the counter cashier who politely and instantly took the wallet from the counter and gave it to my friend after verifying his ID.

My friend asked me how I was sure my wallet would be in the mall. I told him the UAE people had a very good reputation for honesty.

We recalled the wallet incident and he stated that he kept the wallet safe until today.

I felt double joy, one over meeting him and the other that we could fondly recollect our days in the UAE, a place I love most.

The findings of the dealings that favoured Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s son -in-law Robert Vadra has been spun as criticism in a personal vendetta against him by the present National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. David Lean’s fan

In my evening meeting with friends, we usually discuss various topics. Last week, we were talking about famous Hollywood directors. When my turn came, I mentioned about English film director, producer, screenwriter and editor, Sir David Lean, who is responsible for epic films such as  The Bridge on the River Kwai,  Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago.

When I talked about this legend, my surprised friends asked whether I consume memory pills, as his super hit films dated decades ago. I replied that when one is passionate about certain things, memory does not fade easily.

Needless to say, Lean made that evening memorable.

Letter  Published in Gulf News UAE on 3 Sep 16,Tough life for seniors
In the global scenario, most countries are taking care of their senior citizens with healthcare and pensions. Despite many developments in India, senior citizens are not taken care of. Recent statistics also reveals in the print media that India is lagging in pensions. Today with the mounting inflation and the drastic reduction in the bank deposits interest rates, most senior citizens, like me, who are not getting pensions are most affected. The government has completely neglected senior citizens who have contributed their share for the country’s development when they were young. Recently, the government has revised the pay hikes for the retired government servants and this should be applauded, but at the same time, the government should think about the senior citizens who are not getting a pension, but fully depending on their bank deposit interest for their livelihood.
Cost of living is also growing and the medical expenses, including drugs, are also growing. It makes senior citizens panic. At the retirement age, one should have a peaceful life without much worry. This is the normal expectation. I appeal to my government to rethink the bank interest rate to the old structure, which will help all who are not getting a pension and need to meet their monthly requirements. I hope the Indian government will act on this valid issue.
