Letter Published In The National UAE on 1Aug 19 Deceased Indian tycoon was accomplished businessman
I write to you in reference to Rebecca Bundhun’s article Indian coffee firm’s shares plummet after founder goes missing (July 31).
This news item about the shocking disappearance of Indian tycoon VG Siddhartha, who was later found dead in a river in the Indian state Karnataka was incredibly perplexing.
Despite the controversial information that came up about him, I respect this man as he really made a name for himself from scratch.
Mr Siddhartha is a self-made billionaire and no one can deny that he left behind him a true legacy.
His passing is a terrible loss to the corporate world. My heart goes out to his family. I send my condolences to his bereaved loved ones.

India's Café Coffee Day owner didn't failI have failed - these words from the letter of Cafe Coffee Day founder V.G. Siddhartha sent shivers down my spine. The incidence of his disappearance has shocked many in India. It is beyond comprehension what could have pushed a man of so much talent and competitive spirit to take such an action. It's depressing to see how financial liabilities can take a toll on people, and suspend their ability to think rationally. But who would have expected a person like Siddhartha to succumb to such pressures. The authorities are still looking for him. I hope we find some answers.

But this does not necessarily mean the rumours are true. The players have an understanding, they share a common goal and a good team spirit. Now that these rumours have been dispelled, I hope they will both deliver a good performance at the coming West Indies tour.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

This is with reference to the Indian Space and Research Organisation (Isro), which successfully launched the Chandrayaan-2 rocket on July 22 (“Chandrayaan-2: India’s ‘Bahubali’ rocket takes off at 1.13pm UAE time on Monday”, Gulf News, July 23). The earlier launch of the rocket was disrupted by some technical snag. It has now been rectified. The rocket was successfully launched. The floods paralysed the train completely and the passengers were understandably panicked and feared for their lives.Thankfully the National Disaster Response Force came to their rescue. More than 600 people were saved from the floods, including nine pregnant women. I write to you in reference to Joyce Karam’s excellent article Donald Trump says US working with Pakistan’s Imran Khan to find way out of Afghan war (July 22).
During the Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s recent visit to the US, the American President Donald Trump suggested that India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked him for US mediation in Kashmir.
Mr Modi later denied these claims, and this stirred up controversy in the lower and upper houses of the Indian parliament.
The external affairs minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar categorically refused any external mediation in Pakistani-Indian affairs.
This is very confusing, and I think the government should clarify its position: did Mr Modi request the US’s help on Kashmir or not?
India’s position had always been that only bilateral talks can resolve border issues, and has repeatedly refused third-party mediation on this topic.

K Ragavan feels that the story ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’ was an interesting read. He writes that the Karnataka High Court ordering fresh probe into Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce’s (KFCC) spending on toilet renovations is a good move. A 50 sq ft toilet was renovated at a cost of 13 lakh. That objections were raised by some members regarding the amount spent, is quite natural. The amount for renovating old toilets could have been used to construct new toilets. However, it can be hoped that the truth will come out eventually with the HC probe and the guilty will be booked

English cricketer Ben Stokes wonderfully played the tournament, especially the final match against New Zealand. Above all, the host team, England, was lucky when their count on the number of boundaries was more, as compared to that of the New Zealand team. However, there are mixed reactions from cricket players and fans about the board’s decision on selecting a winner. Despite this, the crowd enjoyed a wonderful match played by both teams. Your piece was crisp and explained well the latest developments in conflict-ridden Afghanistan. Eight people were killed and 33 injured by this attack near the university in Kabul last week. The Taliban are denying the attack, but their participation cannot be ruled out this attack can not be ruled out. There is a great deal of insurgency in Afghanistan and hardline extremists are growing in power and influence in this land. I write in reference to your article Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid turns 70: A look back at his life (July 16). This article was an interesting read, offering fascinating details about the early life of the Vice President and Ruler of Dubai. It is interesting to think that had Sheikh Mohammed pursued a career in business, rather than politics, Dubai would have been deprived of a world-class leader. What would the city look like now I wonder, had Sheikh Mohammed not left his mark on it?
Over the years, Dubai has been transformed into the glittering global metropolis it is today, with its futuristic infrastructure and diverse population, because of Sheikh Mohammed’s vision, long-term thinking and international relationships. I have seen with my own eyes the growth of Dubai over the past 16 years. I would like to wish Sheikh Mohammed a happy birthday and a peaceful and healthy life. Your elaborate article on the recent Somali hotel siege by Al Shabab was well written, if dispiriting.Rightly, the brutal attack has been condemned across the world, not least because it claimed victims from the US, Canada and the UK, alongside Somalis.A candidate for regional president was also murdered by the terrorist group. Al Shabab has long sought to topple the government of Somalia and attacking prominent, luxury hotels is a recent trend for Al Shabab, as well as a number of other terrorist groups. This act is absolutely unacceptable and the perpetrators should be brought to swift justice. After so much media and fan speculation, the semi-final ended with a glorious victory for the Kiwi team by 18 runs, which was a great achievement. I write in reference to your article Found in a Dubai taxi: gold bars and Dh165,000 in cash (July 8). Since the flow of international tourists to Dubai has risen markedly, many more passengers leave their belongings in Dubai taxis, leaving conscientious drivers to hand over the articles to the authorities. This year more than 7,000 items have been found in Dubai taxis – an extraordinary number indeed. Of course, large amounts of cash and gold bars are an anomaly but this is a newsworthy manifestation of a larger trend. Taxi drivers are honest and many are rewarded as a result, which is laudable. However, it has given a short shrift to the senior citizens, especially the non-pensioners, who are fully dependent on their bank fixed deposits. Not much thought has been given to them, which is saddening. The current bank interest rates for senior citizens are not sufficient to keep up with the mounting rate of inflation and medical expenses. The Indian government should take cognizance of this issue and initiate remedial action. I write in reference to your article A growing mental health crisis in Afghanistan (July 2). This National editorial was a good read. Decades of war and interruption by Taliban forces and other actors have sparked a mental health crisis in Afghanistan. Letter Published in GulfNews UAE on 2July 19 Encephalitis outbreakThis is in reference to the ongoing crisis in the Indian state of Bihar (“Bihar encephalitis: Senior doctor suspended for negligence”, Gulf News, June 24). Over 150 deaths have happened due to encephalitis in government hospitals and protests from people made a big sensation in the state. The state health minister’s reply to the people is not satisfactory. The lack of facilities in labs and hospitals are the major attributing reasons for these casualties. The Health Minister of Bihar Mangal Pandey’s assurance to people that this issue will be solved and won’t be repeated has not helped. However, the lack of infrastructure and medicines is condemned. The state Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who is known for his administrative skills should come forward and induce confidence among the people. His silence has made more noise. From Mr K. Letter Published in BM on 1July 19 Appropriate measure by Indian Rlys
K Ragavan writes with reference to ‘Reinventing the wheel’ that the cover story elaborately explains how Railways is taking more cautious measures in redesigning wheels for the safety. Indian railway coaches are known for international standards and our exports to other countries speaks volumes about that. This reinventing procedure is an appropriate measure for the safety of the passengers and strength.
