Letter Published in The National UAE on 1 March 18 The Taj is India's pride and should be preserved with care
I refer to your report Taj Mahal's dome leaves cleaners with a quandary (February 27): what an interesting read. India's world famous monument, the Taj Mahal, requires routine maintenance to preserve its appearance. It receives millions of visitors each year. This famous mausoleum is India's pride and should be preserved and maintained to the highest standard, even though there is some risk involved, particularly when cleaning the dome of this centuries-old structure. Though debates rage, there can be no compromise with either the preservation or the safety of the workers. I sincerely hope that the government will take careful measures to clean our treasured monument.

Kamal Hassan in Politics        After lots of speculation and media debates, South Indian film superstar Kamal Hassan launched his new political party in a grand manner in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, and this was the latest development in politics (“Tamil actor Kamal Haasan launches political party”, Gulf News, February 22). He was assuring the people of Tamil Nadu that if he comes to power, he will take care of the villages, by providing education and a good lifestyle for the people. The same practises were done by the Dravidian parties earlier, and Kamal Hassan wanted that to stop because of the rampant corruption. Tamil Nadu is known for celebrities entering politics. Ultimately, the people have to decide. From Mr K Ragavan  India

The Nigerian government’s confirmation that 110 girls are missing after a recent attack by Boko Haram was sad to read. That Boko Haram is still kidnapping girls from schools in Nigeria is unacceptable. The international community should intervene to bring Boko Haram to account for its brutal acts. The organisation should be eradicated. Will the Nigerian government take up this issue with the international community?K Ragavan, Bangalore

Letter Published in The National UAE on 27Feb 18Sridevi was one in a million and will be missed by many

In reference to your report Bollywood legend Sridevi dies at 54 (February 25) about the recent loss of a legend in Dubai, the passing of this charming, versatile actress, who acted in four different languages, was very sad.

She started as a child artist and rose to fame as a heroine, acting alongside all the leading stars in the film industry. She gave remarkable performances in all of her films but a few memorable ones stand out, such as Sadma, Mr India, Chalbaaz and her wonderful role in the Hindi film English Vinglish.

She was also bestowed with many awards and was liked by everyone in the film industry. Her departure is the greatest loss to that industry.

No one anticipated her departure so soon and all of Bollywood will be praying for this calm, smiling human being, who was full of spirit. I pray for her grieving family members.

The capital of the UAE’s initiative of organising walks for everyone to participate in to prepare for the 2019 Special Olympics is excellent, particularly the emphasis on special needs people.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 25 Feb 18    .The UAE's least-corrupt status is laudable
I refer to your article UAE least corrupt in Mena region, league table finds (22 February). It is indeed laudable that the UAE, as the article tells us, is the least corrupt country in this region, receiving a joint 21 rank out of 180 countries with a score of 71. It is worth noting that the UAE scored higher than a number of European countries, including France, Portugal and Spain. The country has witnessed tremendous growth in all areas in recent years. The fact that it is now shown to be one of the least corrupt societies in the world is testament to the spirit that animates the country's progress. Kudos to the UAE.

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 23 Feb 18,
Great leadership and dedication
Recently, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit was not only fruitful for India but also for the three nations he visited, who will benefit in trade, energy, and manpower (“For Modi, road to 2019 will be steeper”, Gulf News, February 18). He was the first Indian leader to visit Palestine. The Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, honoured Modi with the Grand Collar of the State of Palestine, the highest Palestinian honour for foreign dignitaries, and this was laudable. Modi also promised that India will continue to support Palestine for a bright future. In the UAE he was greeted by thousands of Indians and the dramatic development in Abu Dhabi was that the first Hindu temple is going to be constructed in two years. This shows the rapport Modi has developed with the UAE Rulers and its secular nature and tolerance of every religion. In Abu Dhabi, prominent Indian businessmen have taken on the initiative and have volunteered to help in the temple’s construction. The new temple was inaugurated by Modi, and this was another remarkable development. In Oman, he was greeted by the Indian crowd with love and affection from their heart. I think Modi was delighted with the people’s reception. The trip must be a memorable one to Modi, for good long-term relationships with the countries. What I admire about him was his enthusiasm and commitment to the nations he was meeting. Despite the negative comments from the opposition parties on his long-term vision, India should be on the global map.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 22Feb 18Swift justice is needed in India

I write in reference to your story India mob drags suspected child killers from police station and beats them to death (February 20). This tragic incident happened in India's north eastern state and the mobs took the law into their hands, punishing the suspected killers. On the one hand, this incident should be rightly condemned and on the other hand it should be noted that the mobs are getting angry because the Indian judicial system is very slow to punish offenders. Frustration and mental agony are the main factors that account for this act. Judgment should come quicker so that mobs won't act like this.

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on Feb 20,18  Ties between India and the UAE
For more than a decade, the UAE and India have had very good ties, especially in business and in the area of manpower, from the time of the Founding Father of the UAE Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan (“Modi’s balancing act in the Middle East”, Gulf News, February 14). Whether it is entrepreneurs contributing to the field of pharmaceuticals or those dominating the educational sphere, the presence of prominent business houses run by Indians speaks about the rapport India has with the UAE. Both countries have the ambition to expand, and I think this was one of the reasons for furthering ties with each other. Ever since Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office, the ties between the two countries have increased. After his recent visit, UAE and India have agreed on many new initiatives for mutual benefit. Above all, the two countries are keen on eradicating terrorism and establishing peace for the region’s stability.

New rules are essential to prevent further air disastersI refer to your article Iranian passenger plane crashes, killing as many as 66 (February 18). The Iranian plane crashed as a result of heavy fog, and the resultant death of 66 passengers is sad and painful. This plane crash was especially difficult to read about because it came on the heels of the recent crash of a Russian aircraft. Airline authorities should be encouraged not to allow aircraft to take off when there is a heavy fog or other issues with visibility. Such a move might avert further painful loss of life.

I refer to your article Indian banks face $3bn hit (February 18). Every Indian city has been agog with talk of this alleged scandal. The construction of the proposed temple in Abu Dhabi was launched during the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and this was a dramatic development (“Abu Dhabi temple construction to start after three months”, Gulf News, February 12). This is one more milestone in the relationship and friendship between India and the UAE. Letter Publishedin Gulf News UAE on 17Feb 18   Crackdown on cracker factories
In recent months, I have witnessed many fire accidents in major cities in India. In my opinion, the government should shut down the firecracker factories and find other alternatives to provide jobs for those people who work in such establishments. Many factories are employing children and most of them are from underprivileged sections of society. Hence, they are dependent on employment. The government should abolish such institutions and make sure that such children go to schools and manage to make a future for them. India is a vast country with many languages, religions and different festivals celebrated throughout the year. Diwali is the one main festivals celebrated with crackers. Even though this festival is important for me, I am of the opinion that children should be protected and cracker factory accidents should be averted. On one hand, crackers have been used by millions of Indians on the festival of Diwali, but on the other days, safety should be maintained. Children should not waste their young days working instead of studying. Will the Indian government look into this?

A girl hung herself after her school stopped her from writing her exam because she did not pay her school fees. Just because she was unable to provide her tuition fees, she was prevented to write an exam, which is sad and I condemned it. The school authorities should have given a time limit for her family so that she could write the exam since it was just a problem of late tuition fees. Because of this act, a class nine standard child, Sai Deepti has taken the drastic step of suicide, which is painful. Today most of the students are highly sensitive and don’t bother about the after effects of their actions. The school authority is responsible for her act and should be brought to justice. Many incidents like this have happened all over India. This shows the sensitive nature of school children. It is a sad state of affairs.

The recent budget announced by the Indian Finance Minister was mainly focusing on farmers and the agricultural sector of the country, indirectly aiming for the 2019 elections (“India’s 2018-19 budget presentation: What to watch for” Gulf News, February 2). Salaried people and people of the middle income group’s had high hopes, which were not taken into account. Senior citizens who are not getting a pension and are managing with a poor fixed deposit interest are completely neglected. This is painful. The current inflation has not reduced nor has interest rate given by banks, increased. Where the senior citizens not under the income tax will go? But at the same time, opposition parties and analysts are worrying whether this system is feasible and can be implemented. On the one hand, the Modi government's new health policy will cover people living below the poverty line. On the other, each individual state will be responsible for maintaining the system. Letter Published in The National UAE on 6 Feb 18  A sad state of affairs for Palestinians
I refer to your article Israel soldiers kill Palestinian teenager in West Bank arrest raid (February 4): that 19-year-old Ahmad Abu Obaid was fatally shot by Israeli soldiers during a raid in the West Bank is saddening. The teenager's death at the hands of the Israeli military is utterly condemnable. A very sad state of affairs.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 5 Feb 18The UAE might be small but its contributions to the world are immense
Referring to your article Mayor Bloomberg: UAE’s impact much larger than its size (February 1), the collaboration in healthcare between the UAE and Johns Hopkins Hospital to launch the Sheikh Khalifa Stroke Institute in Baltimore and Abu Dhabi is a heartening development. The UAE merits the praise lavished on it by former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg. The UAE might be small but its contributions to the world are immense. It has established a reputation on the global stage for its philanthropy.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 4Feb 18

The recent budget announced by the Indian finance minister, focusing mainly on farmers and the agricultural sector, was indirectly aimed at the 2019 general elections. Salaried people and the middle class class were not the priority. It is painful to note that while senior citizens receiving a pension were granted exemptions on interest for up to 50,000 rupees, those not receiving a pension and surviving on fixed deposits were completely ignored. As a senior citizen I am completely disappointed with this budget.

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 3Feb 18    Day of celebration
This is with reference with India’s Republic day. There was a colourful parade on the 69th Repuplic Day of India and it was witnessed by the South Asian leaders and people. This parade will create a good impression on other leaders about India’s cultural, diversity and above all, India’s military capabilities. Ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s NDA Government came to power, every Indian Republic Day, various dignitaries around the world attend the event and speaks about the Prime Minister’s rapport in the international arena.
